I had a cambelt tensioner causing what sounded to me like a valvetrain/piston type noise, but only when less than 10 degrees C (me, scared?). Mine was also a my00 with 37k km's.

If it's coming from the front right of the engine (standing in front looking at it), it could be the same. At least one other (Subarusian-sp?) has had the same too....

Noticed a new noise on starting the scoob the last couple of mornings, which have been colder than normal. The noise sounds a bit like someone walking on gravel except not quite so coarse (ie its quite muted) and seems to occur at about half the rate of engine speed. It gets less prominent until after about 5 minutes when it's totally gone away.

I've only had chance to try to locate it once and it didn't seem to be coming from anywhere in particular, possibly the turbo area if anything, but it's hard to pinpoint. The car's a MY00 UK turbo on 20k, 5000 mls since last service.

Any ideas would be appreciated

Had it again this morning, seems to be coming from the front of the engine. Didn't do it at all yesterday so it doesn't happen all the time (yet!). This morning the noise was loud enough that I could hear it stood 20 feet in front of the car while I was closing my garage. It's not a knock as such, more like a crunch/grind noise!

Someone must have come across this before?

Question

Hi Dowser

Sounds possible, the 2 or 3 days when it's happened have been particularly cold days. Was the tensioner faulty and replaced?
