Difficulty selecting reverse...
Hello
I bought a MY00 Turbo a few weeks ago, and occasionally it seems to have real difficulty selecting reverse. It just won't go in. I have to keep coming off the clutch, and try reselecting it over and over sometimes. Other times, it goes in just fine, first time.
I've noticed that 1st is also sometimes difficult to get into position. My car is still under its 3 month warranty and I'm thinking of phoning them to take it in this weekend (the place I got it is quite a long way from where I live).
Any ideas what might be causing this, so I know what to expect from them?
Cheers

That MY is known to have problems with the retainer nut, it needs to be tightend up, could also possible be worn syncro or a slightly bend selecter fork
try do a search on here
get it checked if you have warranty left m8

same problem with MY03 WRX but not to that degree, have to dip the clutch a couple of times before it slips in, pain in the **** when you are trying to do a 3 pointer in a hurry.

Try selecting 1st gear then go for reverse, it can sometimes line the gears up so its easier to put in revers but i would say that there is a problem with the clutch or gearbox, probably not major though.

It may only need adjustment of the clutch actuating push rod which is quite a simple job.
However, would get it checked soon just in case it may be something a bit more serious.

Will it go in when the engine is not running? If it will then it's probably the clutch.
Had the same problem when I blew the 5th gear syncro hub and damaged the selector fork on my sti5. It woulnd not go in engine on or off. 5th and reverse are on the same shaft so problems with one can affect the other.

I too in a MY03 have troubles with reverse, select 4th then try reverse again. Otherwise you just have to move car slightly and it will engage. A pain, but "you get that with them!"

Hey there guys,
This would appear to be a small problem across a small selection of models..
I've just stepped into a 02WRX (in Oz), and it too can be a pain in the butt to get into reverse....clutch it a couple of times, and it goes in.
I'm going back to the dealer (Subaru new/used) to see what satisfaction I can obtain...I'm thinking it could be cluth related/re-adjustment..??
It come with a 2-year w'tee (on second hand cars), but if they say, "it's normal wear and tear", I'll tell them to take their w'tee and stick it where the sun dont shine......

Mines been a bugger to get into reverse since I had it (Oct 03/20K miles)
Just pump the clutch a few times and it slots in without a problem.
I would get it checked though incase its anything else. Good luck with the dealer though
