Do you reckon a gearbox oil change will cure with a thicker viscosity oil?or is it a buggered syncro?woops its on a type R.

I think this could be the 5th gear retaining nut that has come loose.

if you have the really close ratio box they can crunch into fifth anyway at high revs

I had the same problem in my car (P1).
It was fine changing at low speeds, but as soon as you started moving it was crunching badly.

It was a little while back, and the car was still under warranty so the garage sorted it all out.

Its another common fault..
The synchro's worn, relpaced 5th gear, hub and synchro to fix. Fortunately mine was done on warranty too.

Hi, I have the early type RA, a MY94 and mine crunches in fifth only when warmed up and have been driving hard for a while. Seems to cure it when I double the clutch. Would this also be a buggered syncro or just thin box oil?

Thanks for the help.
Might just put up with it for a while or more to the point when i can afford it! Did notice bubbles in the oil when i checked it though.Maybe somebody before me had put a non-synthetic oil in there before and i assumed he/she had!
Many thanks

Is your car a Version 5 or 6?

They had a fault with the 5th Gear retaining nut coming loose.

It can be fixed in Situ, Just approach any decent subaru specialist.

I know a place near reading, if you dont mind travelling 100 miles.

Had the same problem on my00... then 5th went all together... this resulted in a gearbox rebuild with a few other bits... Teg Sport rebuilt it for £350 quid...
Got a MY98 Type R now... that does the same in 4th and 5th, so guess what, it's gonna need a rebuild...
Gonna concentrate on my engine rebuild first though...

£350 doesn't seem bad to me,don't get me wrong i'd rather not pay it but if it needs doing then, hey.

All the best

Wink

£350 was a price for parts and labour for fixing the box...
I had the gearbox took off and drove it up to them... they had it for 2-3 days... Were quite busy...
