Default PPG 5 speed gear set

Every one seems to have nothink but good stuff to say about the PPG gear sets and all seem to recomend Paul at Zen to build it, has any one found any negative points with them and by that i mean the gear set and not Zen lol

Question PPG or UK SIX SPEED ??????????????

Dannyboy and Scoobydazza, what sort of BHP/TORQUE are you running out of curiosity?

I know in the near future my gearbox is going to go, so I guess like most people I'm stuck for choice between the UK six speed box and rear diff from API...............Or something like you two have done.

Is it a question of money or is it the helical/straight cut are just so much stronger so you have piece of mind?

What would you do if your scoob is around 400/400 say?
I'm assuming you can pick the ratio of 5th gear when the box is put together say for top end speed/ motorway cruising?

Kev.

I think your getting confussed with a Dog box

The straight cut gears would still have sychros so in theory they shouldn't be any harder to select gears. The reason they are noisy is due to the angle of the tooth on the gear, the straighter the tooth the noisy the gear will be in operation, so straight cut is the noisest.

Helical gears in theory should be stronger due to the larger contact area between the teeth of the 2 gears, but theory does not always work in practise

If your Scooby is used mainly for drag racing go for straight cut gears, if it's used for fast road and the occassional drag race then the helical gear kit should be the better option.

KEVWRX95,

The driver has a huge influence on the BHP / Torque a gearbox can handle, some people can make a standard gearbox cope with over 500 bhp and other people would destroy the same box with 260 bhp. It all depends how mechanically sympathetic you are while changing gear.

Nicely put Colin C!

Remember it is the torque that kills a box not the bhp.
Driver has quite an influence too!

I would like to know the real cost once it is all done and driving down the road.

Not running alot at the moment 320bhp and 265ftlb. Should rise to 360bhp and 310 ishftlb in the near future and after then who knows what.
Because i am planning to some some form of competing with my car this year (SSO and SSC) all in all the ppg kit seemed the best all round option to me.

See my projects thread 'slow evolution' in the project forum for alot more detail.

350 bhp / 340 lbs/ft

will take 400/400 all day though i was assured

i looked into getting a 6-speeder or a 5 speed from a v5 or 6 saloon but
i do a fair bit motorway driving and quarter mile drag strips so figured the PPG would be my best option.....

Straight cut gears are stronger than helical.

Two options on engagement, synchro or dog.

Synchro is more user friendly (like your oem box)

Dog is stronger but needs a firm hand to shift it.

You can of course mix & match.....

Straight cut or Helical with dog or Synchro engagement.

Thankyou for the explanation, and of course this set up is generally lighter than the six speed boxes, I think from other threads about 30kgs lighter.

Second stupid question coming up.......................I assume you can keep your rear diff with whatever you pick for your box?
And if I were to go for a long fith gear for motorway cruising etc again it doesn't matter what rear diff you have?
Cheers
Kevin. (who's 95000 WRX box is not going to last much longer)

The box would be built around your old front and centre diff's that you supply Paul at Zen, providing they are ok when the box is striped so your old rear diff would still match. Your 95 WRX should have 4.11:1 diffs fitted as standard.

Wrong!, size for size helical is always stronger than straight cut.

I always thought the helical gave the longer contact length, but the tooth 'width' was narrower than the straight cut and that straight cut were more efficient in transmitting power through and certainly easier to cut.

Conrad is correct in saying the PPG straight-cut gears are stronger than the heli-cut ones.

I did say like for like. If the teeth are physically bigger then they will be stronger.

Helical is for quietness and strength. Straight cut is for tractors.

You cant compare helical and straight cut size for size in a scoob box, the tooth length would mean a wider gear on the straight cut

Now if you had said tooth ratio
