Default rattle since fitting alloy crank pulley

a few weeks back i fitted a underdriven alloy crank pulley to my 93wrx. the 1st few times i started the car there was no noises but now on cold starts i have a rattle (that increases/decreases with engine revoloutions). its not a clunky sound. its more like a hollow rattle/tinker sound. once the car has warmed up for a few minutes the rattle goes. have i damaged a crank bearing?

when i removed my old pulley i put the car in 5th, applyed the handbrake to hold the pulley still whilst i cracked the crank nut loose. have i damaged something doing this?

im going to fit the old crank and belt in the morning to see it it cures the problem

Sounds to me as if the bolt may be loose.... or, as it's alloy it's shrinking when it's cold, hence rattling maybe...

Just a thought...

sounds a bit like your water pump, may just be coincidence but the re-adjusting of the belt tension might have helped it on its way

Its probably just the bolt come loose.

You cannot get it anywhere near tight enough just by putting in gear with hand/foot brake on.
I tried it like that and only manage to tighten it to 80ft/lb uing a torque wrench.
Should be tightened to 130ft/lb
You will need to make some sort of holder that fits into the holes in the front.

cheers for the response

about torquing up the bolt..... i niped it up with a 3foot long power bar but not ott, too scared of breaking something.

as for the alloy heating up and expanding being a loose fit on the crank bolt, that could be right (i hope).

i will post up how i get on with the old metal pulley tomorrow.

Not so....

You can do the bolt up to whatever the clutch slips at.

Your right Rob.

However I found that by the time the slack was taken up,I had ran out of leverage room.
The only way I could get 130ft/lb was by holding the pulley solid.

Probably just bad technique by me though
