Default Clutch or Gear linkage problems ?

Very recently I've noticed that the gearchange on my MY95WRX has been less precise than normal and when I try to change into reverse it is reluctant and feels very rubbery. On the drive home I seemed to be inclined to almost miss slot the gears, ie from 3 to 4 felt like I could have hit 4th or hit reverse. Wonder if this is likely to be a clutch problem or the gear linkage. If linkage is that a relatively straightforward home job, and is it worth going for a quickshift ?

Does the gear **** spring back freely when you push it to the side in neutral?

Tony.

Once in reverse, pushing it to the right and it seems to return to it's centred position ok, pushing it left and it's harder to do and it moves less to the left than it does to the right.
Engaging reverse feels quite 'rubbery' and it feels like it is not as clean a change as before. This is without the engine running just sat the garage. Just before I parked it in the garage when I tried to get reverse I had to make 2 or 3 attempts before it slotted all the way into reverse for the first time. When I tried it again it was bad enough that I tried going into other gears before attempting a move from neutral to reverse and this took a few moves around the different gears before I felt that I had a cleanly selected reverse gear. To me it feels like a linkage problem but I'm no expert so could easily be proved wrong. I checked the clutch fluid and the level is fine but I haven't ever changed that so it is probably 3 years+ old : worth refreshing that maybe ?
