Question 03/04 UK 5 speed fitting questions? with cv pictures

Ive been thinking about fitting a better g.box before mine dies. The car will be remapped & boost increased etc. (sti version 2)
A common strong option is the sti 6 speed but they seem to be more expensive & difficult to source cheap.
I am not sure if the newer uk 5 speeds are any better/stronger than the pre99/00 g.boxes. I am not sure if they have the same strength as the 6 speed boxes with 1 less gear?
I just want to be sure before I go & buy all the bits only to find out it does not fit or I need this x part too?
I am aware that I need the rear diff & gear stick etc.

If I was to go for a 03/04 uk 5 speed?

1. Do I still need to shorten the prop shaft?
2. Will my driveshafts fit the new g.box & rear diff?
3. Will I need the driveshaft from the new g.box or is it just the cv joint (cups)?
4. Electrical: I can only imagine that the wiring will be different. How easy is it swapping the connectors etc.
5. With my speedo being mechincal, what do I have to do with the new box for it to work?

Thanks Ticky

Bugeye and newgen 5 speeds are the same as V5 and 6 boxes - they are all 754 codes and are not any stronger

You don't need to shorten the propshaft
Linkage and shafts will fit.
Wiring is the same.
Remove the speed sensor from the new box and just screw in your cable fitting

Thanks for all the answers, looks like it might be a waste of time then.
Unless I want less screaming engine with uk ratio's & diff.

Just one more thing does selecting reverse work in the same way. Push down or is it pull up on the newer boxes?

Thanks Ticky

a straight swap as long as you use the matching r/diff or build your front diff/centre drop gears to suit.................

reverse is exactly the same, only the 6spd that's different

Thanks alyn,

I am still not sure about the driveshafts, I remember removing a small pin from my driveshafts when I removed the gearbox to do the clutch sometime ago.

I thought I would go & have a look at the newer 5 speed box at the breakers today. The thing I noticed is that I could not see the pin hole on the driveshaft. 1 of the driveshaft was already out & on closer inspection I still could not see the pin hole. The guy at the breakers said they should just pull out.

So will my driveshafts fit the newer box, or do I use the newer cv joint with part of my old driveshafts?

Ok Ive double checked now, from memory my old gearbox had part/shaft (spline) sticking out of the gearbox when the driveshaft were removed. You can easily see the hole in the shaft (spline). The cv joint has a flange at the end with the pin hole.

On the newer g.box there is no shaft/spline sticking out (with driveshafts removed). It seems the driveshaft/cv joint end is made complete with the shaft/spline. There is no access pin hole at all?

Ive downloaded some transmission pdf files & it clearly show the cv joint having a small pin/hole.

Are you guy sure the later g.box have the same design cv joint into gearbox, as the one I have been looking at seems completly different (fronts)

If they are completey different can I use the complete hubs/driveshafts for it to work bearing in mind my car is a pre96 & this gearbox is from a 03-05 uk wrx.

Some breakers have a habit of not noticing the pin, and pulling the stub axle out of the box on the end of the shaft

I am with you know, I will have to open my eye this time?
With the stub axles being pulled out from the box, would this have cause any damage. I did notice that 1 of the C type clips was missing from the cv joint stub axle end.
This time I will take my digi cam, just in case & post the findings?

Thanks Ticky

Question driveshaft / cv joint pictures 03/04 uk model

Right I have had another look this time had the digi cam with me.
These cv joints look different still cannot see the pin hole.
Like I said before the cv joint & the stub axle look like it made of one piece?

I also tried searching for the transmisson code but cannot seem to find the matching code for TY754VN6AA

link for the picture of the driveshft cv joint

After searching on Nasioc, it looks like the 04/05 cars had a change in stub axle design. (inner & outer)
Pre 03 car still have the stub axles sticking out of the gearbox.
04 onwards have the stub axles built in part of the driveshaft cv joint.

Would I be able to fit the later 04wrx uk gearbox with the d.shafts/hubs etc to my car is a 95sti?
Or would this alter the camber/toe in etc?
