Default Clutch Travel?

I've just recently noticed that there is an inch or so of clutch pedal movement at the top of the stroke thats like free play. It feels like you can push the pedal down that inch or so without the clutch starting to release, if you know what i mean.

I don't know if this is normal or not as i've only just noticed it. What are your cars like?

The gear change feels like it is just catching slightly but at standstill i can't feel any drag.

The fluid resevoir is at the max mark. If it is abnormal would the fluid need changing or just bled?

Cheers

That sounds about right. There should be an inch or so of travel before the clutch starts disengaging, otherwise you would have a constant pressure on the release bearing which would quickly wear it out. There is a return spring which pulls the pedal all the way to the (adjustable) stop, so you shouldn't have any free play as such.
There's a diagram and measurments in the owners manual for this, I'll have a look tonight and let you know the exact details if you want?

cheers

That's ok then, i wasn't sure if it was normal or not, that's all.

Puts my mind at rest.

According to the manual, there should be 5-15mm of play (on the return spring) before the pedal engages the hydraulic cylinder. If you push the pedal with your hand, you'll feel the two stages. My manual is in Dutch or something, so I can't be 100% on this, but it seems logical to me!

Yup exactly, it is to stop loading the release bearing when not in operation.
