Default DIFFERNTIAL BEARINGS

Can any 1 tell me if there are any special things to know when tightening the differential bearing as a mechanic friend of mine if doing sum repairs on my car and has asked to to try and find out cos' he hasnt worked on an impreza before. Also should the drivesahft have play in it ( i.e. Moves side to side when you place your hand on it and shake it.

Car is a Classic shape impreza

There's a compliacted methodology described in the workshop manual for getting cw&p clearances right, you can buy a shim kit from Subaru that space the bearings suitably. I did my own and if I could do it again.....wouldn't

You ideally need to have the box out and the transfer box off to do set the CWP backlash. What has your mechanic done to need to change anything??? Depending on what has been done you may be able to sort it on the car. The driveshafts do move about in the CV joins, but the CV joints should be fairly well located on the stub shafts of the diff, the splines take the drive loads, and a split pin keeps them located.
