Default Drive train damage

I have recently bought a 1998 Forester auto which has been run on three virtually bald tyres and one new for about 5,000mls. Not a good idea I understand. What would be the symptoms if there has damage the drive train?

Thanks.

Cool

Better still, what symptoms do you have?
Vibration, juddering, whining noise, you tell us and us guys on here might stand a chance of giving better advise, rather than discussing blindly.

I would ahve thoiught that the best course of action would be to change the gearbox and diff oils, looking out for severe discolouration of the oil, then use decent quality oils, and i suspect it'll be fine....

Apologies, not a very good post. I'm new to this.

As I have only had the car a short while and it has clocked 100k I am not sure what noises are normal.

The only one that might be something is a very slight whine from the auto box at 30mph on light throttle.

Is the centre diff lubricated by the auto box oil?

Thanks.

Hi Agkq62,

Try the www.subaruforester.com forum and scroll down to the UK/Europe board, lots of Forester advice there.

All I can help you with is that I have a 1998 Forester T/tb auto but less miles than yours and so far- no transmission noise, but I think the whole drive train is pretty robust. The advice on oil change is good.

Cheers
