Default Turbo Heat Sheild, on or off????? Help

Just had my TSL decat downpipe fitted, and it's fookin great now, BUT, they left off the Turbo Heatshield. Now, Ive still got it, and the bolts, so Im wondering whether to try and cut it and put it back on, or just leave it off. Could it cause major issues leaving it off??? Hanley on here left his off with no issues, but surely the heat it develops cant be good!!! Ive got a standard airbox, so Im not worried about hot air etc etc.

Any thoughts guys n gals

The downfall here is the heat going upwards, id have a look to see whats above the turbo (or near to it), really the heatshield does a fine job, if in doubt though, you can get some exhaust wrap and (hopefully not taking your knuckles off), wrap your downpipe with it.

A few options depending how lazy you're feeling.

1. Angle grinder and bolt it back on. (free but probably the hardest to do.)

2. Exhaust wrap it. (hard with downpipe on car but not impossible but will cost a few quid for the wrap kit. Ask Ayde I'm sure he did his at one point.)

3. Fabricate a sheild for the fluid containers above the downpipe (flat piece of steel will work positioned under them)

4. Leave it (I've never seen one cause any issues un-lagged / un-sheilded)

Red face

Cheers Tony, Ive already done that! Ive wrapped the top half, and sprayed the wrap with heat resistant paint too, but, I guess all the heat comes from the back of the turbo! I think the only thing above the turbo, is the bonnet!! Just dont want any of the plastic in that area to melt. Do I put wrap around the turbo??? Suppose the turbo REALLY needs to breathe I think I know what the answer is, but just wondering if its REALLY neccessary to put it back on

Wrapped and painted my H+S d/p before it went on the car - wouldnt fancy doing it on the car! Sourced a spare heat shield from the wanted section on here (about £10) IIRC lower shield is fine as it is. I just made a rough guide with a marker and cut it out, then just used tin snips and a hack saw to cut out the upper shield (you have to remove quite a bit). Kept test fitting and removing a bit at a time until it was a good/close fit, went round edges with a file and rolled them slightly with pliers/mole grips. Re-fit - job done, had a pic and a link somewhere when I did it a couple of years ago, I will try and find them

Cheers Ayde

I cut my sheild last night, but Im fooked if I can get it through the gap and onto its mountings
I undid the bolts on the TMIC and lifted it a little, bit it seems the heat sheild on the gearbox reservoir is still in the way, and I can get the bolt off!!!!
What do I need to move?? I cant see anything I dont even think removing the TMIC will do the trick! How the f**k did he get it off in the 1st place. Wish i'd be a mechanic instead of a **** star

Forgot to mention it is a lot easier and probably quicker to remove the intercooler is a bit of a tight fit but it will go on(IIRC you have to angle it to where the intercooler was and then rotate it round), you may need to trim a bit more off the shield. It is a fiddly job trying to get all the remaining bolts back into the shield I had plenty of practice doing this due to a poor fitting magnex d/p which I initially purchased!

Don't know what year car you've got but i've got a 93 wrx and after I fitted my Afterburner 3" downpipe I managed to get the heatshield back on without removing anything else. Bit of a pain but it will go.

Yip! Mines the MY99. Wat a PAIN in the ***.

Ok, so I undid the two screw/bolts on the IC, and the BIG jubilee clip into the manifold on top front, and theres one underneath I can see from the turbo side, which I undid. Would only budge a few inches!!! How the hell does it come off Ayde???? Anything else I need to look out for?????

Cheers mate

You will have to take the pipe off the dump valve or un bolt the dump valve (which ever is easier). Probably best undoing both jubilee clips on the intercooler outlet. Think mine was a pain the first time, you have to pull it to the passenger side of the car and push it back at the same time, may help if you use a screwdriver to lever the rubber tube carefully on the outlet pipe and crack the seal that way, get a bit of wd-40 between the intercooler outlet and the rubber tube too

Have fun

I ran mine for years without a heatshield without any issues.

When I upgraded my turbo I heatwrapped the hotside of the turbo when it was off the car. Heat wrapped the downpipe when it was still on the car.

Hi,

I have a supersprint downpipe and I didn't installed the heatshield, in those really hot days, when I stopped a little too longer, I noticed the car a bit slower.
Now I installed the heatshield back on and don't have that feeling.

Only had that once due to an accident on the motorway, not a good feeling!

Finally got it on with only removing the bracket on the IC. Had to bend the shield virtually in half though, and the try and reshape it whilst in place. It was a ba**tard to find the holes again. Only got two bolts back in, but its solid and doesnt rattle. Can still smell strange smells though
