Default Gearbox problem. HELP!

I have recently noticed a sort of whining sound in second gear.
It only does it when i am coasting along with no acceleration and when i accelerate it stops.
It only does it in second as ive tried it in all other gears and its fine.
Anyone else have this problem or know what it is

My 2003 WRX has done this since new (or at least I noticed it after about 2K miles) - exactly the same only in 2nd gear on the overun when coasting. It doesn't happen when it's cold only when its warmed up. I mentioned it last year at the 1 year service an they said nothing wrong.

It really annoys me, I was wondering if they all do this (4 wheel drive, 2 diffs and all that). I would be very interested to hear others views on this. I'm going to mention again at next service in September.

Yap...same here....whine on decel...try changing the gearbox oil for motul/syntrax...if it gets louder, go back to stock oil. Oh...and try changing tyre pressure front/back (put a little more in the front than the pressures you've got and go for a spin)

Ok it's worth a try. If it was the tyres then why is it only in 2nd gear and only when hot? It sounds a bit diff(y) to me - from the front diff/gearbox area. What year is your car?

Thanks

Yours sounds identicle to mine mark. It sounds like it coming somewhere just after the front wheels like gearbox/diff area

my03....had that whine since day one....on decel is whinning like a baby, and with a little sound of gear mesh (hard to describe). Didnt grow didnt worsened, but got better (silence) with more front tire pressure. So, it whines on decel, it whines at 60mph cruising...ehehehe I think i'll change stock radio for a 1000W system!

Oh...and cold is hard to listen. The whinning rear appears on hard cruising or 30m of city stop and go....(so also is heat related). Maybe the tolerances between gear theets or syncos are so tight, that whinning is a consequence (since at hot, material expand and those tolerances get smaller and smaller)
