Smile SX FPR & an in-line Fuel Pressure Gauge (UK95)

Has anyone fitted an SX (15404) Fuel Pressure Regulator to a MY95UK? Also because it doesn't have the fitting for a Fuel Pressure Gauge has anyone fitted an in-line one at all?

I've got all the parts with the exception of a couple of connectors for the FPR which are arriving on Monday. I just need to know where to put them all now

Any pictures would be dead handy

Cheers

MAFFA

Question

I've gone a different route. I've got a seperate in-line fuel gauge that I can put in a different location or if I choose put between the regulator & the fuel line

Could the fuel pressure gauge go anywhere (i.e. somewhere near the fuel filter) or does it need to go after the rail/before the return?

mines to thr right of the intercooler (nearside of car)actually mounted off the i c righthand bracket but have also seen them on drivers side suspension turret. less pipe work where I've mounted mine. sx to middle fuel pipe (of the three) bottom sx feed back to tank.

The way i understand it the gauge can go anywhere between the fuel pump and the regulator. Theoretically the pressure should be the same between these two points. I put mine between the return from the fuel rail and the reg. As with Ken though mine was for a Defi sender.

Tony, they're about £18 inc delviery and VAT IIRC. Le Mans Motorsport make them but they can actually be bought cheaper through Demon Tweeks. Make sense of that one!

Cheers Carl... i've seen the ones from DT (£8 plus vat for JIC -6 ends) and others similar to yours. Its Maffas tho that i'd like a price for, much more compact which would suit me better.

Why doesn't that surprise me so that'll be two extra straight connectors and gauge fitting now, you'll end up spending more than me, actually I've got a spare straight connector that I bought incase I changed where I fitted the reg, you can have it if you want.

You can cut your fuel pipe wherever you want and put in a 6mm bore T. On the spare leg of the T you can add a bit of fuel pipe or whatever to take the pressure sender. All for a few jubilee clips and a T piece.

Tone I guess your question was answered before I got a chance to come back . The adaptor was £7.74 with the two barbed pipe fittings at £2.64 each all from Think Automotive . Part numbers BPA3-6 & HEFP7-6. The gauge I bought seperately as its an FSE one & this cost about £19 from Motorsport world (inc VAT).

The FPR I imported from the states for about £60 inc p&p . Beats the £150 some people want for one over here & it arrived in about 3 days

Harvey - So you can measure your fuel pressure anywhere on the fuel line?

As long as its not after the reg.... anywhere before should in theory be ok. I'm putting mine after the fuel filter as it then feeds the rails.

Question

Another question - With a fuel pressure regulator is it possible to install a set of 440's prior to a remap? presumably you could just adjust the fuelling appropriately?

I've seen threads where this should be approx 3bar on idle with the vacuum hose disconnected. Is this correct?

According to the pre97 Subaru diagnostic manual, fuel pressure at idle with vac line on should be 1.8 to 2.1bar, so with a min vac of 0.7 bar with the line on it should be 2.5 to 2.8bar. This is considered 'normal', so 3.0bar is a touch too high.

As for using the 400s before a remap, not really a problem if you drop the pressure a bit. Personally i wonldn't run for long like that tho.

I've got everything I need to fit the thing now thanks to Fuel Systems Enterprise & Think Automotive:

8mm push fit connectors for the SX Regulator;
Replacement Gauge holder from FSE with 6mm push fit connectors;
Adaptor for the fuel rail with an 8mm push fit connector;
8mm high pressure fuel hose;
6mm high pressure fuel hose;
A couple of 8mm-6mm push fit connectors (1 spare);
A few hose clips (screw type) for both 8mm & 6mm fuel hose.

What I am proposing is this:

Firstly add some 6mm hose to either side of the fuel pressure gauge and fit between the fuel filter & the fuel rail. I don't know if anyone else leaves the gauge under the bonnet but if not i've a blanking plug for the gauge port when not in use.

Secondly i'll need to find a mounting position near the o/s pillar under the bonnet for the FPR. I can then remove the old FPR & in it's place put the fuel rail adaptor. I'll run 8mm fuel hose from the rail to the inlet on the FPR and fix in place with a couple of clips.

For the return i'll run 8mm fuel hose from the return side of the FPR & reduce it to 6mm with the 6mm-8mm push fit connector. This should then fit directly into the 6mm return hose already there. Once again i'll use the hose clips to fix it in place.

All that is required then is to extend the vacuum hose to the new FPR .

Easier said than done but it does seem quite straight forward

With regards to the fuel pressure regulator & my 440's i've been informed that I should set the pressure to 2.3 bar? The idle will apparently be a bit lumpy until my remap arrives but it should be fine. I've also been informed that the standard fuel pressure is around 3bar?

Oh another thing. Because i've changed the fuel pressure gauge adaptor would anyone like the one I purchased from Think Automotive? It's new & unused. See picture below:

It has -6JIC male ends on it but I also have two 3/8" push fit adaptors for it to go into 8mm hose.

These cost me £15.30 +VAT but you can have them for a tenner plus say a quid for delivery?

You should use 8mm all round as 6mm is smaller than standard (7.5mm) so will reduce the flow capability, and due to the daft fuel run around the manifold there's enough pressure drop as it is without putting any extra in.
