Gearbox and clutch out to do that. £200 quid plus VAT and a seal cost about £12.00 plus VAT, If we did it for you. Can be done on a Saturday morning usually.

Oh foook!!! :O

Either way it'll cost me £££!!
I think its the front as the oil seems to be leaking onto the oil filter from above??
The cambelt has already been changed and I presume that once a cambelt is off, then a new one MUST go on to replace it?

I sort of assumed rear oil seal. To change a front seal requires cam belt off and at that point you might as well put a new one on. Especially if it has oil on it. Cam belt off is best done with the rad out and it's realistically a 3 hour job - done carefully. Cost around £170 plus VAT in total if you re-use the antifreeze.

However, Zippy do you want to come here and do cam belt changes for me at £20 a go? - no need to do the crank oil seal as it would take longer. So lets say £18 - seems fair to me.

Hashi, Just check that it's not power steering fluid as the reservoirs leak like the Titanic and the oil gets everywhere. You might just take off an upper cam belt cover to see if there is oil sprayed around in there. That'd be a good indication of the front crank seal leaking.

No problem David, i paid £20 for my front seal to be changed on my MY01 and he was my Subaru dealers head mechanic.

I didnt change the cam belt as there is no need to if there is no oil contamination on the belt.If your car is MY01 onwards then the fans lift out allowing enough room to do the job without the need of removing the rad.

Default Cheers for the info lads....

Although I've taken the advice of a Subaru main dealer (they did an interim service on Weds) who say that it's the crank oil seal, however, this is their estimate for the job:

To replace oil seal = £225 +VAT
New Cambelt = £75 +VAT

Total = £352!! Now am I being sceptical or is that just a p!ss take?!

I've sourced an oil seal from a motor factors for a total price of £11.15,
but it says EJ25 on the label! Surely its meant to be EJ20???

And looking at it, it looks like you could just rip the thing out - crappy little piece of plastic...

The EJ20 and EJ25 seals are the same thing. No worries there, although we stopped using factor seals a while ago as they tend to be slightly under diameter and have a habit of twisting and working their way out with a much bigger leak. Subaru genuine is 806733030 and £5.78 retail. Why buy crappy bits of plastic

At the sort of labour rate that Subaru charge the cost is not unrealistic just that they charge a high hourly rate. You need to get ahold of Zippys man, if he's prepared to do it for ' a drink ' and it seems quite a small drink that's the way to go.

Just remember private work like that offers no warranty for faulty work.

Good Luck David APi

We refit the oil pump backplate screws on rebuilds with loctite; that fixes it!

David APi Engines /APi Impreza

PS so yeah no takers here - they're not always disastrously loose, but they're quite often loose.

Of the number of front oil seals that i have seen falled and subsequently changed, none needed the cambelt replacing due to oil contamination from the dodgy seal.

Your dealer will always air on the side of extreme caution and say it needs changing but tell them not to change the belt, just the seal.

To be fair i was lucky in that the dealers head mechanic set up on his own and wanted the work and for £20 it wasnt worth me dirtying my hands.

He is based in the north west and can do all Subaru models, his was the only name on all the Subaru certificates up on the wall of the dealership as the rest of the spanner monkeys where next to useless and i wouldnt let them near my car at servicing time.

I'm Cheshire/Merseyside - I know of a Scooby tech in Middlewich and also in E'port. Have leaking Scoob, but will travel! (for the right price!)

Got any contact details for this guy please? You can PM me if you like...

Your affectionately,
