Head Bolts - Reuse or bin?
Just a thought here are these stretch bolts are can these be reused? Just torqued down more or?
ARP can be reused I know.
Is it worth just binning them for the sake of it?
Jon.

Mildly modified Rob nothing major. Standard WRX engine with 300bhp max.
Reuse them then and torque them upto standard or give them another 45 deg turn ontop of the recommended engine torque for head gaskets?
How much Mark? Only for the runaround Impreza whilst mine will be off the road.
Cheers.

Note to say big boost I would be using the ARP anyway as before. Just out of interest on the standard engines.
Jag engine is stripped and uses stretch bolts to achieve the required compression so was enquriing out of interest if the Subarus were the same.
Cheers!

Re-use unless there is damage on the threads, Light oil under the head to allow ease of torquing.
Do not exceed stated figures like give them an extra 1/4 turn or +ten ft lbs; they do their job best at the correct setting.
Anyone who sells you a head bolt change on a Subaru engine is just running the bill up - IF they actually fit them - how would you tell?
Unless of course you are substantially increasing the expected power output - in which case studs every time.

Dissagree on studs, mine is fine at high boost on bolts.
I agree though, how would you tell? like how would you tell the gearbox and diff oil had been changed or that you had a new flywheel or steel rods or....
I reuse em pretty much every time, but i have had bolts snap when undoing on stdish cars, For the sake of £60 i changed em on my own engine.
Rob
I would also use correct lubricant rather than light oil under the bolt/nut washer, this will give more consistant torque across all the bolts IMHO

don't normally, friend of one of my "EVO" customers..............
to be honest with the amount of non-scoob (Evo, GTiR, Supra, etc.) work we have done lately, its getting like "anything goes"..............seems there aren't many people actually prepared to work on anything other than Shopping cars round our way, so we end up with it!!
if your man's local get him to call in and i'll see if i can help
