Smile TD05-18Gs have landed :)

A few pics of some of the first TD05-18G's to arrive in the UK fitted with the latest upgraded high flow compressor cover and 01+ water pipes.

As you can see, it is closer to the 20G in size/design but should retain the spool up rate of the 16G due to the increased efficiency of the 18G compressor.

Look out for their appearance on a few well known scoobynetters cars very shortly

Andy

The 01+ water pipes you mention Andy, how about pre 01 cars ... classics actually?
The compressor cover outlet looke to bend upwards, is that right or just a photo artifact? .. i.e. existing pipework will fit ??

Will these fit? Any other mods than bolt them up / remap needed?

I seem to recall people on here said there was less lag / lower turbo boost threshold on a 20g TD05 than a std TD05 ... now I am getting confused!

Port Seton optimism exceeds Marshall optimism. Must be due to higher octane fuel and better brakes

Me too. I accept the efficiency argument for a larger compressor, but not sure how putting a larger compressor wheel on the same turbine helps boost threshold and response

Gussy,

I knew it would have been in safe hands if you had collected it.

We will see the difference at Well Lane on the 20th March. Both Midlife's and my car will be identical (apart from different make headers).Should be interesting !!!!!.

Andy,

See you tomorrow

Hi Andy,

How much would it be for one of these beauties? Mail me off line if you want.

Hi Andy , Looks good (but what do I know ) LoL , are these better than my 05 /06 ?????? fitted to my classic uk, >> Alan,
Very similar to your turbo Alan, this will potentially make slightly more midrange power and slightly less right at the top end.
I would recommend the 20G for Sti's with the higher rpm limit and the 18G to maximise the available powerband on a car with a 7k rev limit.
The way your particular car spools up the 20G so quickly Alan, there is no advantage to you fitting one of these.

The 01+ water pipes you mention Andy, how about pre 01 cars ... classics actually?

Same fitment for classics, direct bolt-on, just a different top water pipe would be supplied. The compressor outlet is within 5mm of the original, slots straight into the existing pipework. Preferably this would be a Samco pipe as the discharge is slightly larger diameter.
The reason the 20G/18G can produce an even lower boost threshold than the std TD05-16G is because the larger compressor requires lower rpm to make the boost.
Turbo lag is partially determined by the inertia of the turbo, this in turn is mainly controlled by the exhaust turbine wheel which is steel and many times the weight (inertia) of very lightweight alluminium alloy compressor wheel.
A 16G for example needs to spin up to 115,000 rpm for 1 bar boost, the 20G only needs 98,000 rpm.

So at what point do you stop scaling up the size of the compressor wheel on a given turbine housing ? Are you saying that this is pure upside, with no compromise involved ?

Bigger compressor wheel does give more top end as per the post from AndrewC below

"Just top prove how much more topend the 05/06 is here is a DD Road Dyno plot of a TD05/16G (pale lines) vs a TD05/06-20G:"

http://ladsoc.co.uk/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=718

"topend" crossover is c. 5200 rpm, area under graph matters to me, as well as peak

Disclaimer : I think these are a good value turbo series, however I am always reluctant to accept free lunch arguments from a vendor

Thumbs up

There comes a limit when the small turbine spins the big compressor up so quick that the engine can't swallow the air quickly enough and the compressor 'stalls' this means the air blows back past the blades making a chuffing sound, this can damage the turbo. The 20G wheel is about as far as you can go on a TD05 turbine on a 2.0

You're absolutely right ! I'd advise anyone to have a run in a car first to see if the new power curve is what they are after or not.

Look out for the next few issues of Scoobymagazine where they are taking a MY03 project car through all the TD series turbos from TD04, TD04 hybrid,TD05-16G, 18G and 20G, with dyno graphs and acceleration data for each stage.

subscription would get you every issue for the next 12months..

if you want to just buy 1 copy then just order that 1.

I think the issue Andy spoke about is going to be in issue 4.. which is not on sale yet I don't think.

Is there really going to be any MAJOR benefit over my own 05 90degree turbo Andy? Enough to warrant the money side anyways?(Not a dig at your price!)

I have not tested them back to back on the same spec of car (yet) Dave so I can't give you any absolute figures.
I have supplied a few 18G's now and the first of them will be hitting the dyno very soon
I'll have my own car fitted with one soon so feel free to come and have a run in it
