Default Is my diff humped?

Hello need help from the experts, these are the symptoms: I get a clunking noise from the back end when i change up or down the 'box.
My diff makes a very loud whine and doesnt sound healthy.
When i chuck it round a bend the back steps out a bit.
The car generally runs like a bag of pish and feels like im dragging the diff + gearbox behind me.

So from the above info - is my diff humped?
If so how safe is it to drive the car?
How much will it cost to fix? how long?

A friend reckoned it was the bearings in the diff.....
Another said there are wishbones which could be fuked.... or a cv joint? - me no think so. I know a cv joint when i hear one...

I am not a mechanic so i am pretty clueless....

Please help.
Cheers. STI.

Sounds like either:

The prop shaft is loose. Tighten.
The big nut on the front of the diff is loose. Diff knackered if so.
There is no oil in the diff. Diff knackered if so.
Diff loose on the frame. Tighten.
