Question Changing Drivers Side Rocker on 97' Classic UK

Evening All !

Leaking rocker gasket on the drivers side making a nice smoke effect from bonnet vents ! )

Got a replacement gasket today, and rather than go wading straight in, any hints > Is it a nasty job ?

Any help appreciated... Haynes dont appear to do a manual..

Cheers
Drew

No easy peasy.

Remove the airbox completely to gain access, then remove 8 bolts from the drivers side. Tap the cover off and catch any oil that comes out (Ideally do whilst doing an oil change.

Remove old gasket and clean out crap.

Refit new gasket and quick bit of hair spray on the gasket to get a good seal.

Put back on and bolt back on.

Cheers
Jon.

not easy peasy..

You get some that will leak and some that wont...

I personally also use a thin smear of RTV (or instant gaskey around both sides of the rubber gasket.) also around the seals on the bolts..

Tighten it evenly and dont over tighten..

you will need either a 1/4drive socket set or a ratchet spanner or **** loads of patience..

PS Dont snap the bolts!!

Mine was replaced once on my old engine by a Subaru dealer and that was unsucessful. My new engine also developed the same fault - it has been repaired twice by a reputable dealer and it still f(cking leaks. I understand that this is a common problem as the flat 4 construction of the engine means that this part is always in oil.

It dried out from the heat of the exhaust underneath and started leaking on my '97 car. Replaced it as per CustomScoobyIOM's description but used some instant gasket stuff on the seals / gasket too. That has sorted it. Not a hard job, about £60 for the gasket and seals IIRC.
