Expecting to collect a Jap downpipe with sports cat in place this morning (thanks do API Engines ). I want to wrap the tube headers/up pipe/ turbo and downpipe on the car to max the heat/flow and keep the under bonnet temps low.

Do I or should I wrap the cat itself along with the pipe?

Will the insulation be too much for it? I doubt it will have a heat shield around it, so if I cant wrap I will fit a shields instead to save the bodywork etc.

Any thoughts?

Most Cats come with a heat shield as that's the bit that gets really hot. Std cats have a heat shield and insulation so I don't think it will be a problem IMO.

It's much better if you wrap it even for the cat as it reachs working temp much faster the mornings!
Prodrive catted downpipe comes with wraped cat when the rest of the downpipe is unwraped!
I have all my exhaust (up-down pipes, centre section) except rear box wraped for noise reduction with no problems so far the only thing you have to do is to heat paint the wrapping to avoid moisture.
You need at least 15-20 meters x 5cm wide heat wrap.

I made a turbo blanket out of the alumiumised glash cloth you can buy, using staples to hem it, and stainless lockwire to act as a drawstring. With finer wire you could use it like thread okay and make a nice shiney blanket for you cat in the winter.

Why not fit a sports cat in the centre - much, much better turbo response!

 

I should have put this thread up tonight as I now have the previously unseen d/pipe in the garage,
The pipe had previously been wrapped in Japan as you can see the band's marks.
I was planning to cover the fresh wrap with aluminium tape, glue on the back which is commonly available to add some road protection.

You'll see this pipe when I start the '380 x 330 engine build' thread....

Out of interest/info:
The Police are starting Civillian based/police empowered groups who can (legally) stop you and check the car for MoT/tinted glass/Zorst emmisions etc, and this is why I'm doing this lot. Big Brother is coming for YOU!
If it's duff, they can impound the car and tell you where the bus stop is....

911, If 'big brother' does stop you, you are quite within your rights to defer the test. You have 7 (or maybe 14 days) to do this. For example you may have an intermittant miss-fire that could cause you to fail a road side test;-)

The article in the Sunday Times also states that some degree of 'give' may be there at the point of test, but you must talk to them nicely not like a prat, but the scheme is coming to my front door in the West Midlands.
I know of a few Impreza's in my village alone who should be worried as they will hear them coming from a mile away.(gets us a bad name)

Here's an harder option to do. I made a heat shield from a stock DP. Between the shield and DP is heat blanket material. I loosely packed the cat area with pieces of heat wrap material.

The Cat is similat to mine, just a bit shorter.
