Have a 5door and a 4year old daughter and one on the way and no intention of going bigger..
The Impreza is ample.. you just have a job on your hands convincing the wife
As to mods on the Forester..
STi or whiteline anti roll bars, Decatt, Green Cotton panel filter (assuming they fit), and an ECUtek remap..
Talk to H&S (www.haywardandscott.com) for the decat, remap either Bob at www.brdevelopments.com or Pat@22b.com.
Antiroll bars and air filter might be listed in the http://shop.scoobynet.co.uk/
The 5door Impreza is a real work horse though

The Forester only really has a bit of extra headroom space and vertical boot space as it shares the same floorpan as the Impreza.
The JDM Forester comes with about 240 bhp - the 168 bhp comes about from UK emission controls, fuel quality but primarily from marketing needs.
The Forester is not aimed as a high performance beast and also to avoid competing with the Impreza.
You could up the horses by starting with a JDM model 2 litre turbo or even the tasty 2.5 turbo (265 bhp and 280 lbft!!)

Handling mods as per JGM's post, you may want to fit 4 pots which require 17" wheels to clear.
I swapped my wagon for a forester for more space ( and the mahoooosive sunroof ) when my daughter was in-progress

Looks like I'm about to join the club in both senses!
I'm looking at a Forester this weekend and baby Tang is due in April!
Having owned three Imprezas, I ruled out buying a wagon (less space, attention, etc)! She wanted an automatic, so the way forward for us was a Forester.
Look at imports but the insurance premium is about 50% more than a UK car. Also the UK cars will run on normal UL, while you should run an import on SUL.
As my wife would be driving the car day to day, the more frugal option is ideal.
If it were me, I would be in a manual Japanese import!
