How do you tighten the 5th gear retaining nut???
I have a MY99 Uk Turbo which has a snick into 5th, i have been told by various other users on here that its the 5th gear retaining nut that needs tightening and that its a common problem.
I was just wondering if there is a guide to doing this or if someone could post a few guidelines who has done this before as i havent.
Cheers

Take the gearbox out of the car and remove the centre diff casing. Then get a socket on the nut holding the gears in place on the shaft and tighten it up to the correct torque (can't remember what it is though)

It is possible to remove the rear housing off the transmission [ the larger one about 10 inches in - not the little rear one right at the back ] without taking the 'box out and expose the shafts. Then you can put a 'kin' great spanner or socket on the nuts and re-tighten. You'll have to jam the shaft to tighten the nuts. Or more usually selecting a gear and then a friend with a spanner on the crank pulley can generate enough energy to pull against you. The shaft nuts are peened over and will need re-peening.
The only tricky bit is to remove the roll pin that holds the yoke of the selectors [ gear lever end] to the selector shaft. Once the yoke is off, the housing and all the centre diff guts will come off complete.
You'll just need to fiddle with the selector shaft inner end to re-locate it once it's going back together. lt's a bit more obvious what l mean once it's in bits and you can see. Done carelessly, it is possible to misalign the selector mech from the gear lever into the actual selector shafts in the box - thus ending up with 5 neutrals. Wiggle it on, fit the yoke, get a friend / wife to check all gears are there and then re-fit the rear housing.
There is a gasket in between which should ideally be replaced, they are only a few quid from Subaru [ UK / JDM are same] and probably not worth risking having to do it all again by using sealer and having a leak.
Off a ramp it's an oil messy uncomfortable job - but will save a heap of cost if you are brave.
Re-filling the 4.5 litres of 75W90 in through the dipstick hole is the biggest most frustrating bit.

While it is indeed possible that the nut has come undone, at the same time as ordering the gasket that David (quite rightly) suggests, get yourself a new nut. If it has started to come loose, the threads will have chattered and worn!
While you're at it, would it not also be a good idea to order a new 5th gear baulk ring?
A snicking baulk ring on engagement could simply be down to a worn baulk ring.......
