Question Problem Gearbox.

Bought a 93 Impreza WRX a couple of weeks ago and the gearbox is shot. Lost second gear. Purchased a secondhand one from a breakers and was guaranteed it was the right one.Paid £350 for the box and £250 to have it fitted and all seemed ok until i took it on the motorway and it seems to be winding itself up. I think the gearbox i was supplied with doesn`t match up to the diff on the car. Now i don`t know whether to get a diff which matches the gearbox, as it`s easier to change, or try and get the correct box. The original gearbox has a label EF-TY752VB3AA stuck on it. Does anyone know if this denotes the specific model of gearbox, and does it also relate directly to the diff aswell as if i do replace the diff, i obviously need to be sure it`s the right one.

The Jap box has different ratios and drop gears and needs the jap rear diff.. assuming your car had the original gearbox in it you have bought a UK gear box and need a UK rear diff, or a jap gearbox..

I wouldn't drive it as you will over heat and break the centre diff etc..

The original box [ VB3AA] is a standard WRX box with 4.1 final drive ratio.

Let me know what the TY number is of the box that you have fitted and l'll tell you whether it's compatible.

I found out today that the box supplied was for a 95 wrx which i presume is the cause of my problem. Different gear ratio. I think i will probably return the box and try and source the correct one.

It`s a wrx. An import. Just stripped the original box now anyway. Turned out to be the second gear selector.
