The core is completely different in the STi intercooler, more efficient. You would have to get someone whos into all the technical stuff to give you the full rundown though.

Also depends on your engine, mate, some standard UK turbos benifit from STI intercoolers, others don't.

I have this on good authority

Mine has one and DID benifit, but the person who mapped mine said not all do.

I changed my MY02 bugeye intercooler for the STi and according to the mapper was much more efficient

Midlife......

Not sure about earlier models though

This is what I am considering doing on my 01 wrx.
i was told that changing to the better sti intercooler and bonnet scoop more cooler air , so the charge air going in will be cooler , hence more power.
Plus i like the look of the sti bonnet scoop.
Advice would be good though.

I swapped my standard MY01 WRX for an STI jobby also (although still haven't got round to sorting the the STI scoop and underscoop to complete the job )

Not sure how essential a mod it is if you're only going for say a TEK3 and decat which is what I'm running at the moment. I do intend on uprating turbo, injectors, fuel pump and a further remap in the future but at the moment haven't got a clue what parts I need or where to source them from and too busy at work to do some research

The further you mod, the more essential an uprated intercooler becomes.

I'll have to copy someone else, Midlife, what turbo, injectors, etc you running

I was offered an STi intercooler for my UK99 - seemed like bugger all difference (apart from the colour). I also asked this question a few years ago and answer seemed to confirm that...

Worth distinguishing between classic and new age on this. My understanding - classic - no real gain, change the hoses, new age - gain going to the obviously bigger intercooler with bigger scoop if possible.

Keeping an eye on this thread myself as I have a MY01.

Where would you source one from anyway, breakers yard? I guess they will be quite expensive especially through the main dealer.

They are different when I put mine on(MY 99UK) they appear to be the same but when you look closley the STI is a different shape at the back (think the Y-pipe helps too). All I can say performance wise is it didnt feel much different but the car returned some impressive rolling road results at Prosport considering the only other engine mods are a K&N panel and a full de-cat (H&S dp with magnex resonated centre and bb) and std ECU. Unfortunatly I dont have before and after figures so I cant say whether the STI i/c influenced them.

They turn up on Ebay quite a bit - may be worth doing a worldwide search on Ebay as the £ to $ exchange rate is good at the moment.

Chris

This is what I put on my MY02 bugeye for 325 BHP and 288 Torque (Well Lane). I was following in the footsteps of Ninnybobs and it seems pretty pragmatic

TD05 front entry conversion turbo
STi Intercooler
Samco Silicon hoses
Sti Pink Injectors
FSE fuel pump
FSE fuel pump regulator
3 port boost solenoid
EcuTeK 3 Custom re-map by BRD (Bob Rawle) 1.38 bar max
Ported and wrapped headers
NGK PR7 plugs
Haywood and Scott full de-cat
TSL centre section
Magnex oval 6X4 back box
K & N filter

At Roger Clark Motorsport there is an APS FMIC, RCMS headers and up-pipe waiting to be fitted but just can't seem to get the time (family)

Midlife...........

PS

I "swapped" my STi8 TMIC for the FMIC and now run a WRX TMIC which is not ideal and as an interim solution so I offered to buy a STi8 from a scoobynetter to keep me going but I don't think he liked me offering to buy it by cheque as he never got back to me. Maybe he still has it ??

Can't put my finger on the invoice for my STi8 TMIC but I had to meet the deadline for mapping with Bob Rawle..........Stan Palmers came up trumps but seem to remember £550 plus vat for the Intercooler...... plus £80 plus vat for the STi "Y" piece, and the Samco hoses

Just so happens that I bumped into a bloke I know whos put an STI intercooler on his car. He went to a breakers yard and bought his for £200. (Photo below) He said it did make a difference. Hes just sorting out a water spray at the moment.

Look at the size of it. It also seemed to be deeper than mine.

£200quid.........................................a bsolute bargain if it's a STi... I seem to recall some additional pipes in front of the intercooler but I may be wrong ??

I'll try and post a pic

Midlife....

Not sure about the dump valve though

Cheers Midlife

Are the headers essential?

Where did you source your turbo from?

I'd been advised to go for a TDO5 front entry and STI injectors by a fellow s'netter so hopefully with those and the fuel pump I'd break the magic 300 barrier

Might have the injectors lined up, just need to find the turbo.

Yeah, but would you say that it made absolutely bugger-all difference having thrown away a couple of hundred quid?

Hi Chris

I'll have some ported headers available when the FMIC goes on.....

For the bugeye I think that the combination TD05 FE / STi TMIC / STi Pink Injectors / fuel pump / regulator / de-cat / TeK 3 re-map / Samco hoses / PFR7 plugs / 3 port solenoid / seems to give a reliable 300 plus BHP and high 250 torque

It just depends how you go about it I went for well known suppliers and paid for availability at short notice

I'd ask Ninnybobs (who might be watching this post) about injectors from the USA and as ever mail Andy Forrest about a FE TD05

there's a massive difference in flow & cooling from the earlier ICs to the newer ones, i went from STi2 to STi5 and the difference was huge, throttle/boost response was better, certainly worth the couple of hundred quid it costs

Just got my Sti8 (£200) in the post.
Compared to an Stiv3 TMIC is is 60% greater surface area and deeper. Its so big it is hard to imagine it will actually fit in the same space.
Getting cold air across all the surface will be a challenge.

MINE makes a special deflector shield for them but silly $$$$ @ £140 + vat etc

I'm please to be up grading this way. FMIC = £600 + a lot of messing (and Insurance)

(For the new age owners) by fitting the STI I/C how you arrange the A/C hoses that are back of the I/C hitting it in every engine movement?
