Tiny Grind When Selecting 5th - Help!!
I have got a small grind when selecting fifth gear, but my clutch has gone and is slipping quite bad (from about 2000revs +)
Just wanted to know if this is the reason behind the grinding or whether i should have it looked at when it goes in the garage this week when i have the new clutch fitted.
The cars a 1999 Uk Turbo (Standard no mods)

just got my car back after the clutch has bin fitted.
it has a little nick into 5th and the garage said they found some filings in the oil (they wern't brass so he said it cant be the syncro) does anyone know whats involved in fixin it and how much its likely to cost

Tightening the nut on 5th can be done with the box in car, but it still costs a few hundred quid at dealers - may be cheaper if done while the clutch is being sorted. MY99 prone to this I'm afraid - 3 times on my P1...

when synchros go they dont usually break up there are grooves on one face that grip on to a smooth face and being slightly conical in shape as you change gear one gets pushed in to the other and eventually grips enabling the synchro hub to turn at the same speed and enable a nice change. when they are gone as to speak there is a problem either with the grooves or the angle that the two faces meet at this then wont allow them to grip to each other and the the hub grates as it goes in. as yours are just snicking as it goes in means they are on the way out usually. but try putting a good oil like syntrax in the gearbox first before you have a rebuild as it might just be the oil is the wrong grade. if you do this and it still does it then it's just starting to go wrong and new synchros will be needed eventually.
im sure some one else can explain a bit better!

The receipt is from Surrey Performance:
"Remove Gearbox, check all gears & bearings, cleaned internals"
"Tightened 5th gear stake nut"
"Reassemble gearbox"
"Fitted & supplied lightened flywheel & clutch assy"
8.0 hrs labour
£200
HTH if its the usual nut prob
Spen
Edited to say; per Scoobyboy above, cheapest & easiest 1st step is to change oil for known & recommended grade, can make a HUGE difference.
