on behalf of a mate he's currently got about 350 bhp and he's after doing 1/4 mile racing what is the best gearbox/diff combo for this (my 96) been told the sti5 is good also what diff ratios and could he just swap the diffs instead to get the desired result

I would think 4.11 ratio will be best.
4.44 will be crossing line in 5th and an extra change.
