Default Quick question re gearbox price.....

Guy's, my my00 box seems to be showing it's age, with the odd snick into fifth, and a few other things, now then, i've just been offered a my01 uk box for £275, is that a good price, it's done about 10k and is said to be in good order, all thoughts gratefully recieved.

Id say it was a good price
Its just the fitting that might be expensive

I can do the fitting myself when I get around to it, it's just wether it's the right box, the code on it is ty754vn2aa, both mine and donor car are UK spec, just waiting to chaeck it's the right code really.

There is no difference between the MY99-my04 boxes, the 98 and below were different due to the engine being a phase 1 unit, you shouldnt have any problems fitting an MY01 box to an MY00 car

I'd say that's an excellent price, especially if the mileage is as low! I paid £400 for a MY98 gearbox with more miles than that.

For information......I discovered that as my car was MY99 and the replacement g/box was MY98, there were fewer bolts holding it on at the engine. The MY99 box which came off had 8 (i think!) and the MY98 only had 6 bolts. After talking to lots of experts, I was told this isn't a problem. The internals are the same, its just the casing that was different. 6 bolts was more than enough for a 260bhp UK car.

Just some info in case there is slight differences between the 2 casings and bolt holes in your case.

Also.....apparently its just the first 3 digits in the gearbox code which tell if they are compatible.

Thanks Euan,
The b4atard sold it to someone else before i had a chance to get advice and then reply to him, the only saving grace is that it was going to be a 500 mile round trip to collect it!

Without trying to sound to pesimistic, you'll probably struggle to find one at that price.

I know a good place who always have one or two in stock. Probably not with that mileage, usually around 60k miles (which is probably more likely to be genuine IMO).

I could look their number up for you. They know their stuff, and offer good sound advice. I'd be quite confident buying from them.

Also you could try www.findanengine.co.uk (i think!!) but avoid the company called Universal Spares who work through that website. Its a long story, but basically they are a crowd of crooks!!!

Thanks Eaun,
I was only getting the box cos it was cheap, and as a spare for when mine needs replacing, i'm sure it will, it's just a matter of when, but after this I think I'll wait til i actually need it!
