Unhappy Knocking when turning

I have a pretty horrible knocking when turning right. I thought it was a knackered cv bearing (gaiters both ends of both shafts split and never reported on last mot!) but now I am not sure since someone else who heard it was adamant that is was the opposite side front driveshaft in need of replacement?

The car is a '94 Impreza 1.8gl (i'll get the turbo one day soon since I am now never getting any other make than subaru!)

Do you guys have any other ideas, if it is the shaft, how is it done?

If it is the shaft is it the universal joints that go?

rgds,
mike

a friend of mine had the same problem with his shafts when truning. He resolved the problem by greasing the ends of the shafts, use only synthetic grease. I think that will solve your problem

Even if nothing is worn or damaged (which I doubt from the hideous knocking) I still need to replace the split gaiters.

Thanks for the tip about synthetic grease, I didnt know, and have used ordinary CV joint grease when I previously tried to get some lube in there. When I discovered the splits I checked the inside and two of the four DS (driveshaft) ends were pretty dry so I tried to get some in there.

If I had any confidence in the diagnosis suggesting the need for a new DS I would take off the gaiters and perhaps then see how you get the DS out. If I do look closer at the DS what is it on the DS that goes - what do I look for?

I notice that the DS sits inside 'a can' at the engine end, what is it, and it's purpose?

How does one check the CV joints?

Much ongoing thanks!
