Not expecting an exact answer here -obviously exactly how ign maps are done is very much left to the style of the tuner and what the customer wants.

But as a general rule, when meddling with ignition maps (main ign map and advance ign map), what "colours" do you tune for?

Say at load 4.4 increasing up the rpm axis on a JDM car, do you target for predominantly medium blues, light blues, greenish-blues, or greens? Will you try and get the same colours for loads 4.7, 5 and 5.3 (if used) ?

The colour merely indicates a level of ignition and has no relevence to tuning, depending on your max/min timing you will get the same colour meaning something different.

Best forget it and just use to sense check your mapping ie "have I cocked up and mis typed something"

I thought the colour represented the knock sensor output? (the little boxed figure on the top left of the map, above the load axis)

Cos when I do a run with heatsoak, I get more greens. But with exactly the same map and same type of run without heatsoak, I get predominatly blues or greenish blues in the parts of the map which were previously greener.

The same colour can indicate a value in a map zone but it could be either a value derived if the am is 16 or, in a different zone with the am at say 10, I'm refering to the ign advance maps here which are the maps that are factored in by the am.

Forget the colours, they only indicate level and contrast.

Oh and the small box contains the engine load value not the knock output.

Thanks for the reply Bob, but I'm only still half getting it. Maybe let me slightly rephrase the question (I posted this on ECUTEK forums too) -

Given a particular load point (4.7load vs 4000rpm say), my main ign map gives 13.05 and the ign correction map gives 9.84. The learnt ign correction map (8X8 map) is showing all zeros. AM is 16. Does this mean that I'm running 13.05 + 9.84 = 22.89 degress BTDC at this point?

Will the colour at this load point box be that corresponding to 9.84 degrees advance in the "colour keys" knock correction scale (medium-dark blue)?

If I do 2 back to back runs with no change in AM or the learnt ign correction map (8X8 map), is it possible for the same load point to be coloured green in the first run and then blue in the second run?

Theoretically yes however the ecu is a very fast worker in respect of fine learning, the software is much much slower and could miss what is acually happening. So it could have retarded and then advanced again as it traversed a zone, its very dynamic and the learning grid elements cover more than just one zone.

If you have the software to look at this then you must be a tuner ? ... if so you need to spend some time working with the software to get your head round it, its not soimething to guess at.

Ok, I wondered how you were accessing it since the software to do that is only sold to recognised tuners .. no offence. You can't read or look at the map without.
