Erratic 5th Gear!!!
Help required.
I run a MY99 that has covered 76,000 miles and the gear shift slips out of 5th and lodges itself between 5th & neutral, whereby you have to reselect 5th several times before it is successfully in gear.
Generally happens on a random basis, under steady driving conditions or when you let off the accelerator at most speeds.
In addition, 1st and reverse are becoming increasingly hard to select i.e. you have to double clutch to select as well as slightly revving the engine before selection.
Regards,
Waz

My my99 (V reg) did this exact hting at a mere 20k miles. Back to the dealer, fixed in an hour, never did it after!
''common problem, don't worry''
Car sold 2 years later at 70K, no probs at all.
Dealer was Andrew Burt in Solihull, West Midlands. www.andrewburt.com

Exactly the same problem with mm MY00 @ 50000 miles and cured problem after a thread a few weeks ago. Some dealers want to strip the box, others will go for the possible solution. If there is no other problem, ie 3/4 select normally, go to any Subaru dealer and ask (tell) them to replace the 5th gear nut. 3 hours labour - no gearbox removal. Now done another 5000 with no more problems.
