Lightbulb Headers!!

Hi people ;-)

I would like to know what is the moust used aftermarket headers in your cars (users of this forum!!!)

Would you choose it again???
What are the gains that you feel??

And if you use the same aftermarket headers that I use - Gruppe-S ones you already solve once for all the problems whit the leak from the headers to the Gruppe-S up-pipe??? If yes how??? Sugestions??

Best Regards

Gruppe-s, Stopped the up-pipe leak by using 1 composite gasket & 1 steel laminate, Gained 30 Bhp & 25 Ft Ilb, peak boost moved up a few hundred Rpm, Pulled all the way to the limiter & pops & bangs on over run like anti lag.

Dean, do you loose the Scooby off-beat note as I presume the headers are equal length?
Did you need to port the headers to the gasket profile to get such a result?

Such a gain from an external mod is worth while!

911.
You still get the offbeat burble low down as they are un equal, but more of a motor bike scream higher up, Did not bother porting, but wish i had now , But i cannot be bothered to remove & refit. Must admit i was really impressed, used the same rolling road , before & after, They offer two sizes of up-pipe , I think mine is the larger bore, it says on here somewhere in a post about leaking up-pipe by John Banks. Well worth the money if tou don't mind p1ssing about to sort the leak out.
There was also an article on here about different headers suiting turbo's better than others, The gruppe-s came out V well with the Td05

HKS - very good. I think that the Gruppe-S is a copy of the HKS headers, so you'd get the same sort of performance presumably, the only difference being bat the HKS are made properly...
MRT - fantastic. However, they don't make them anymore, and I managed to overheat them a tad so they distorted & are now at H&S being bent back into shape... someone should copy these & start marketing them! Very narrow tubing, so very high gas velocity & fantastic spool-up, although I'd guess they'd run out of puff at around 440bhp (they can max out 550 injectors @3.8bar atmos, ). But, as you can't buy them anymore, that's a bit academic, really

I'm thinking about the one's from Roger Clark Motorsport at the moment. Look pretty well made as far as I can tell.

Ask Olly at RCM. Very helpful

Back at the Autosport show 2 years ago, TEG had a set of headers in matt black paint, not Stainless. They were slightly unequal and small tube diameter, maybe they were MRT?
I fitted small dia headers on my 911 from a 2400cc engine to my 3200cc engine, and the low down grunt is fantastic, but the 911 is a very different animal.

Will H&S make the headers from your pattern?

How much are Gruppe headers anyway, and is there a Web site?

Time to gather some engine mods together for Xmas in the garage!

H&S are just beding the things back into shape although I do keep wondering if I should persuade them to see if they can do anything about copying the pattern...

Try: http://www.gruppe-s.com/

I have the V2 headers with the cast collector in conjunction with a solid H&S uppipe, which is in between the small and large bore Gruppe-S uppipes, I have had no leaks whatsoever (famous last words), the fit of the headers to the uppipe was perfect.

I didn't get the car dyno'd before fitting the headers, but according to dataloglab, I gained about 25ft/lb and 20bhp for a loss of 200rpm spool up (but still get 1 bar at 2800rpm in 5th/3000 in 4th). Max torque on the dyno is still at 4400rpm, max power just over 6000.

Thanks Andrew!
So, if i fit a 3'' exhaust with race cat, an up pipe and a set of headders, all about £1550, i will pick up about 30 bhp and 30 lbft.
Add an Andy F turbo, 550 injectors and a FMIC for about £2000, and top it off with a GEMS ecu for 2000 more, yikes! £5500.

And i thought modded 911's were bad!

As far as we are aware (as MRT's UK agent) MRT are still making headers, both equal and unequal length.

They are still advertised on their website and we've heard nothing to suggest that they are out of production.

I've sent a mail off to confirm this, but just thought I'd highlight it.

Thanks

Rich

Hi Rich -

Sorry - wasn't trying to suggest that MRT didn't make headers any more, just that they didn't make the same ones! This design is a fair few years old, and appears to me to be one designed on pure performance, rather than any form of marketing... i.e. comparing them to other headers, they look like they should be on a small-engined bike, the tubing diameter is so small!

Hi m8,

No probs. You had me worried for a second there. I've mailed MRT anyway just to confirm.

Thanks for the reply.

Cheers

911, for hillclimbing a FE TD05 + headers work very very good ..... probably u will only need to sort out the fueling, which could be easily done with a FPR and a APEXi AFC (or similar).

Carlos, thanks for that, Is the turbo an Andy F one? Won't I need to increase the inject size (550cc) and the pump obviously. Can't stretch to the ecu yet though I know where a Gems is for an my97....You clearly feel my stock Sti ecu is ok. I do have a Bltz boost controller on the car @ 1.31 bar.
I do not want to loose the Scoooby note, so interested in the 'slightly' unequal headers mentioned above.
Really looking for a torquey engine, @ 340/350bhp but driveable!
What do you think?

911, I am hillclimbing (and similar events) my car. The gruppe-s headers are unequal headers and you don't loose the scooby note .....

If you are aiming for 350bhp then the 440cc injectors should be able to flow enough with an uprated fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator. At least that is what I am using on my car. Like I said the FE TD05 which both Andy F and Mark (LateralPerfomance) should be able to supply + the headers work extremely well. And with some sort of auxiliary fuel management which could be done using the fuel pressure regulator and an APEXi AFC (which u should be able to find at a low price) you should be able to reach some decent HP and torque.

How about these headers from ebay in the States:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEBWA%3AIT

and

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEBWA%3AIT

and these really cheap ones that look like a OBX copy

Thanks as ever Carlos. Are you running the stock ecu? I don't want to get into mapping at this stage, just keep it 'bolt-on'.
I think the engine mods you say will give me the kind of 'driveable' engine the hill climbs need, you know what I mean!
I presume lagging the headers is also needed (if only to keep the oil filter 'cool'.
Does the Gruppe header come with up-pipe?

Regards, Graham.

Was there a Gruppe-s group buy some months ago?
If so, what ££££ was agreed, and does anyone have a set new/secondhand to sell with up pipe?
Sorry if that's a Wanted ad in disguise...

I did a g/b on Gruppe-S headers & up-pipes last summer. Most people paid £340/£350-ish all-in.

Fatman, did all the headers sell, or is there one just for me in a dusty corner?
Price sounds good.
Any out there?

Graham, I am not running the stock ECU, I am runnning a MOTEC M48 ECU, but have at least two good friends that are using the stock ECU with just a boost controller and the APEXi AFC. Headers need to be lagged or u can also order them jet coated.
BTW it is better to get the H&S uppipe, or even stay with the original uppipe to prevent leaks.

Always worth asking, can get a set from the USA.
Carlos, thanks for coming back. There may be a good Gems for sale soon, but i'd rather get the other bits together first, headers, TD 05, injectors, pump, plan the bank robbery.............bloody cars!

There was a set of Gruppe-S for sale here with flexi up-pipe that seemed to cure the leak issues.

Contact gruppe-s with your questions at

sales@gruppe-s.com

They replied back the same day with answers to my questions, very helpful. You could even try and arrange a GB, I am sure you will have a lot of response if the price is right!!!!!

Those that bought the Groppe headers then seem to have problems now!
Seems there are 2 types, and the latest one's are more robust than the early (group buy) units.....
Maybe the HKS ones are the right ones, but are they slightly un-even lengths to retain the 'throb-throb' of our beloved engines?
