Default Knock Link & AFR... Where can I get them?

Hello all

As I am in the mood to throw more money at my car by getting Bigger Injectors and ECU

I think its time to go and buy some safety sensors... Them Being

Knocklink
AFR ?? Device to monitor Fuel mixture

I don't want to spend mega money and I don't want a unit thats bloomin huge...

What do you recommend?? How much should I be paying... Where from..

Do I take it that the knockling is easy to fit in that you fit sensor on engine and run wire from that to unit inside car with a 12v + & - ?

And that the Fuel mixture thingy takes its reading from the ECU wiring??

Look forward to some replies... May get stuff for weekend..

Rob

Unfortunately, if size is a priority, you won't like the Knocklink. There is a 52mm pod analogue version of the Lambdalink, strangely called "Lambdalink Digital", but Link have yet to design a pod version of the Knocklink. I'm sure someone will get round to it at some stage. What some people have done is take the Knocklink apart, remove the LEDs from the PCB, solder some lengths of wire between the LEDs and PCB, and mount the LEDs somewhere on the dash/top of steering column/A-pillar/etc... looks loads better, if you can be arsed (I couldn't! )...

Cheers for replies!!!

Regarding the Lambalink

Does this unit take its readings from ECU wiring or do you have to fit another sensor........ is it easy to fit??

Regarding the Knocklink, Do you just fit the sensor to the engine by inlet manifold and run that wiring into the car and feed a 12v -&+ to the unit, Does it calibrating etc, I hear they have level controls???

Cheers

Regarding the Lambalink, does this unit take its readings from ECU wiring
Yes, with each different ECU having a different pin location. For instance, the MY00 AE802 ECU is blue plug 136, pin 21.

do you have to fit another sensor
Nope.

Regarding the Knocklink, do you just fit the sensor to the engine by inlet manifold
Yes, beneath the passenger side of the intercooler. There should already be a bolt, which should be removed and replaced with a slightly longer bolt, to cater for the extra height of the sensor (again, on MY00).

and run that wiring into the car and feed a 12v -&+ to the unit
Spot on. I ran my + and - to the back of the cigarette lighter, with a 1amp in-line fuse from Halfords, as fuse doesn't come with Knocklink. Great eh...?

Does it need calibrating etc, I hear they have level controls???
Not really, even though the instructions tell you to. Thing is, the Knocklink wasn't just designed for Imprezas. I suppose Impreza owners are fortunate that the engine doesn't tend to generate much noise at the frequency the Knocklink sensor listens at. With this in mind, the general opinion is to turn the sensitivity fully clockwise to maximum. You then simply learn what activity is important, and what can be ignored.

You can test it's working correctly by turning on ignition, ensuring the bottom green led is dimly lit, and tapping the top of the bolt holding the sensor in place, with something thin and metallic (crappy coat hanger, aerial, thin screwdriver, etc). Check that you get amber and red activity. If you do, job done...

Sorry to jump in, I only got one green light when tapping the bolt with a small iron bar. Does this mean the sensor is not working properly ?

Clive,

The sensor is designed to listed to a certain frequency. If you tap it, do it with something like a long screwdriver to simulate the sparkly noise from det.

If you don't get anything near Red, then I'd suspect the sensor. It's a seperate Bosch one and not the OE sensor you're using with the KL right?

Was the noise a "thud" or a "tick" (excuse my descriptions!)? If it was a "thud", it won't work as well, so you'll need to hit the block itself, alot harder. If it was a "tick", then I'd have expected it to light up like a Christmas tree, so make sure the sensitivity is fully clockwise...

That explains it then, more thud than tick. And yes using the proper sensor. This is all very complicated !!!

You need a Bosch sensor with it. What sized injectors and ECU are you going for? had avdice from anyone or is it a DIY job?

Trebor69,

If you order a Knocklink from some suppliers (BRD, for example) you'll get everything. Others will sell you the monitor & sensor seperately, so just check what you're getting.

Together the cost varies between £120 - £160. Display on it's own is approx. £100, sensor & connectors are around £30-£40 on their own.

I have pics and part#'s on my website. Basically it consists of 3 parts -

1. The Knocklink monitor itself - the black box + wires, but bare wires so nothing to connect to
2. A Bosch sensor and
3. A Bosch Jetronic connector kit - this is the little pins and connector you need to interface the Knocklink to the sensor.

As I say, BRD will sell you everything. If you order things seperately, then just be aware you need all three parts.

Ok on the Knocklink front now lads.. Thankyou very much indeed

One more question on Lambalink

As it takes its signal from the ECU (I have a diagram so no probs there)
What sensor does it take from.. Lamba sensor I take it..??

Reason I ask is i see BRD list an exhuast clamp on sensor... Is this for tuning purposes????

I am an electronics engineer by trade, So I will probably take out the inerds of Knocklink and put into a nice little display.. Why they make them so so big FGS!!
