Default Gearlever centre point

Hi, a quick question.
I got my 93 WRX last week and the gearlever seems to find it's own centre at 5th/reverse, where all my old cars have been at 3rd/4th. It's not a major problem, but it's a bit too easy to hit reverse when changing up from 3rd or down from 5th. Is this normal or can I adjust it out?
Thanks.
Mitch.

Have you looked to see if the bias spring is inplace/broken between the gear linkage/box?
If you jack the front of the car up (and axle stands!) look close to where the prop goes into the rear of the gearbox. To one side there is a large link from the box to the gear lever assembly. It is mounted on a 50mm diameter rubber bush. On that bush is a large steel disc covering it. Off that disc on a small tab there should be a spring about 60 mm long looped between the gear link and the disc. If that is not there I think this is your problem. If it is there then the detent mechanism has failed and I think that is inside the box....
Hope this helps.
