Smile Adjustable Diff's

Hopefully some of you guys may be able to help on this one.

Mate of mine has just brought a 97MY Jap Import Scoob, Think its an STi, but eitherway it has an adjustable bias diff.

All works fine, but when he puts it into Diff Lock and just goes on full lock, he says he can hear a knocking, but only when its on 'Diff Lock'...

Anyone have any idea's as to what it is ?

Also, What does the diff lock bit do, besides the obvious

TIA

Steve

when locked (at slow speeds whilst cornering), the diff will bang and crack like a goodun!

There is a post on here by JohnFelstead RE the useage of the diff, but since the software changed my bookmark dont work

Basically, best not to use the diff lock too much if driving slowly and manoeuvering.

In mine, I only really notch it up to the 2nd/3rd indicator light when the roads are REALLY wet, and only ever use the lock more when snow/ice is about (you will find that it pushes the car to understeer more the more it is engaged).

For "normal" dry high speed driving, leave it totally back!

You shouldn't do that!

Yes, it's the locked centre diff fighting the front axle's desire to turn. The answer to this, is not to run with the diff turned up when reversing or manoeuvering at slow speeds.

Also, What does the diff lock bit do, besides the obvious
With the DCCD thumbwheel fully "down", the car will have a rearward power bias, and thus pronounced RWD handling traits.

As the thumbwheel is turned up, the centre diff is progressively stiffened, promoting increasing amounts of stability under acceleration and braking, but at risk of understeer, fight through the steering wheel, and strange noises from the transmission in lower speed corners and manoeuvres.

There shouldn't be any need whatsoever to run with the diff on Lock in current conditions, that only really helps on snow or gravel.
