Default Possible tooth missing from reverse gears? oh dear!

Just had 52.5K service which is the first since owning my MY00 car which I bought in October.

Since owning the car its always made a clacking sound in reverse. I asked the mech at Subaru to have a look into why. Their best guess is a tooth missing off reverse Its always done it since I've owned the car and I suspect its been known to previous owners.

Anyway, any ideas what I should do? Subaru said its a 10 hour job just to take it apart and find out why and if the shaft (?) needs replacing its even worse. Seemed to me we were talking £1500 to £2000 but I don't know.

Get it repaired, get a recon 'box or wait and see what happens? If its going to costs the same to repair the exisiting one or fit a recon one why not wait till it dies?

Anyone?

I can only hear it when the clutch is down and the car is in reverse I can't hear it under drive moving backward. If its in a forward gear rolling backward it doesn't do it.
