I was out in my 93 WRX yesterday evening when I became aware that all was not as it should be with the gear selector. When the car is in neutral, there is a lot of play with the gear stick. It does not seem to have any force against it anymore. Is it possible that a spring has broken/detached in the selector part of the box? I can get all gears OK and there is no crunching or any other noises.

 

just found out there are couple of springs associated with the selector. One inside the box and one external. I'll look tonight.

 

it will be the one just by the linkage u.j out side the box this one holds it in neutral and when it snaps the lever flops from side to side
