5th gear slightly noisey - MY00 23,000miles
Noticed a strange whinning noise today, that only occurs when it's in 5th. I've had the car a year now, and not noticed it before.
It is most noticable between 45-60mph and the volume level can increase and decreased slightly if you flex/move the gear lever slighty whilst still in 5th. In fact pulling the lever back slightly and it's almost gone.
change down to fourth and all is fine.
The car is now coming up to 3.5 years old and from what I can see it hasn't yet had a gear oil change (although it has only doen 23,00miles).
Syntrax sorted the syncho on my old MY94, so I'm tempted to give it a try.
or maybe the linkage needs a tweek....what do ya reckon ?

Take the car straight to a subaru dealer, there were some problems with 5th gear on a few MY00's due to the nut that holds it in place coming loose, cant remember off hand the full details but i believe it was a factory fault.

Thanks for scaring me... not the fact that the gearbox might need looking at but that I may have to use an offical dealer.....
Anyway...today no noise from the box. The only noise I could get was provoked by moving the gearlever around in the gate. But all gears done this and none were as loud as yesterday.
I have since dropped the oil out and replaced with Syntrax....we'll see what happens.
The old oil was pretty brown tho'. Not too much in the way of iron filing on the plug magnet, but a fair amount of what looked like molybedelumn grey grease.
Also only got Max or 3.5 litres out so it may of been a little low (but no sign of any leaks)
