Is it possible to make use of the EGT signal going from this sensor to the ECM? Say, feed that voltage to an EGT gauge assuming that the voltage output is comparable to aftermarket high temp thermocouple outputs?

I would think it pretty safe to assume that it is a thermocouple of some description, since there are very few resistive temperature probes that will take the heat. Only question then is what kind? Again, I would think it reasonable to assume that it's a K type, ie about 40 microvolts per degree Kelvin.

You always need an amplifier with this kind of temperature probe, so assuming that the input impedance of the ECU isn't loading the thermocouple, and that any thermocouple amplifier you may choose to use likewise does not load the thermocouple then the two should coexist happily. (Note that the amplifier is often built into the gauge).

I'de just order the RS Components large LCD temperature gauge, it's about UKP 50 and it takes a K type input. Then I'de wire it in and see what happens. If it does work then be happy, if it does not then another 15 quid will get you a K type probe and the boss to hold it... just drill a hole into one of the headers and thread it 1/8 BSP and wind in the boss... ie if it works then it has cost you UKP 50, if it doesn't you'll still get EGT but it will cost you UKP 65....

Hope this helps,

Pat.

I think you'll find that the £50 K Gauge from RS, runs a little shy of the 1000C' you'd need. IIRC it reads to about 600C'.

Mark.
