Question

Hi,

Sorry if is the wrong area to post in.

As you all know subarus have three vents on the bonnet... my car a 5dr turbo uk has metal blanking plates on the back of the two side vents... held on by 4x 8mm nuts... I have removed these and the metal backing plate will come away and the vents can still be mounted with the factory bolts....

Is there any advantages /disadvantages of me removing these??

Obviously the battery and water bottle dont need that much air... but I was thinking of putting a k&n on the car very soon. (I realize that these vents are to get air out... not in!)

Apart from scum sticking their hands through.... razor wire should sort!.. still Id be the one that got in trouble for keeping "my razor wire" under the bonnet...

I have the drivers side open on mine, The engine appears to run slightly cooler in trafic nowadays, you can see the heat haze whilst stationary, I have the HKS induction kit under it so it may draw in some air from there as well.

My HKS dump vlave sounds a lot louder with the blanking plate removed.

Been open over 12 months without a problem, even it the rain we had this weekend.

David,

I done the same (with an induction kit fitted) and it buggered the MAF sensor.

Reason being, rain would come straight into the vent and would be absorbed by the filter so when starting the car it would bunny hop up the road causing the MAF sensor to fail (knocking / vibration etc.). If you decide to remove them you will need to fit something on the underside to ensure that any water runs past the filter rather than onto it.
