Question

Fitted this on Friday and took a trip over from Hull to Liverpool at the weekend...
1,I beleive I have got an extra 30miles out of a full tank -incredible...
2,The pick up is much smoother from low revs
3, The induction note was a bit disturbing - a sort of woosh/hiss sound - my wife likened it to Darth Vader having an asthma attack!

Im not sure i can live with the noise on a daily basis, but I like the other effects..

Question - Will a panel filter such as K&N,Green or ITG give a similar effect but without the extra induction noise?

If so, which one would you recommend guys?

Cheers Mike

Mike,

I too have just fitted a 57i. I must admit I've notice the increase in mpg, and I think that there is an increase in pull.

I did have an ITG before, and I think that the KnN is giving a little bit more grunt(but it might just be my imagination), but one thing for sure is that it is increasing the mpg.

With my scoobysport system, the ITG usedto make a whsitling noise, similar to the KnN, but no whooshing when changing gears. Albeit I found that the KnN doesn't always do it - how about you?

Unlike you I love the noise, so don't think I'd change back.

Not sure if this helps, but I hope so

Matt

Thumbs up

Chiark,

Pretty easy, just a case of taking the old MAF - turbo pipe off, remving the airbox, and re-connecting the KnN bits.

Hardest thing I found was getting the bolt out of the cooling resevoir to attach the new bracket to.

Anybody else have this problem, if so what did you use to loosen it?

I fitted one on Friday it took 2 hours,(MY wife was supervising she was a bit nervous about me fitting myself)The only problem I had was fitting the Hoses in the tiny holes they had drilled but with some boiling water and Vaseline it was a breeze.Great sound and even my Wife noticed the improvement in performance and that nasty whooosh as she describes it.
Must be a ss back box next I had better get back to work and start earning extra money to spend on my car...

Cool

Has anybody pictures from the K&N57i kit for the My200 model and fitting instructions?
I think the kit is similar with the APS's one.

My e-mail is available...

Well, if/when I do this, I'll put an idiot's guide on the web as I always try to do.

My car's an MY00.

So the wife would notice it then? damn...

See above. Worked with me. Print out the scoobysport page, but miss off the bit at the bottom which says, "improved fuel economy will only be felt when caning the knackers off your car", or something like that.

Plus it's stainless steel and guaranteed for 25 years.

Plus it'll make your car sound awesome, even to wives. Mine, on the rare occasions that she does drive it, seems to prefer the SS note

Chiark,

Let us know how you get on fitting, like I said earlier, I had trouble with the removal of a bolt - I'd be interested to hear if you have the same trouble.

If it is the noise that you think your wife will object to, when she's in the car, just put her favourite CD on really loud

It's not the noise, it's the fact that I'm spending/wasting more money on the car. Apparently, it doesn't need to go any faster.

Regarding fitting, I'll put up a handy photo guide with slow instructions for the hard of thinking, like myself.

Matt,

You say you didn't notice the whooshing noise when the ITG panel filter was fitted.

Had you removed the airbox resonator?

The reason I ask is that I have an ITG panel filter, no resonator and I can here the standard BOV very clearly when I lift off with any amount of boost on.

I would be interested to hear from anyone who has gone from my setup to the K&N 57i.

Andrew...

Chiark - sorry mate that it is a little harder to defend against - also, I notice you're looking at the Godpseed brake set up, what do you think, I must admit I'm sorely tempted (mail me off line if you'd prefer).

Andrew - no, I still had the box on. As I said above, most noticeable thing for me is increased mpg, and having been for a bit of an a-road blast yesterday, I think it might pick up better at higher revs.

I used to run with a ramair panel, and hardly noticed any difference! After fitting the K&N the difference is noticable, (especially pickup and noise), but at full bore it's drowned out by my scorpion 4" exhaust (minus cat)
To answer the questions on fitting the K&N, I found it non problematic, however some of the hoses need re-routing and a few bits (especially the accelerator cable) need binding with tape to prevent chaffing. If anyone wants further info, just email me.
Chiark - when your wife notices the noise, tell her your car is suffering from hayfever!!!!

Well, the filter arrived today, a week earlier than Demon Tweeks warned me it might take.

I don't think I'll get a chance to fit it until the weekend...

Fitted it last night in under an hour. No problems at all.

I'm just writing the obligatory photo story, and will post when finished

It is a touch boy-racerish, but sounds good. Seems to pull more urgently lower down, especially on a hot day. And, as you say, the car "sneezes" when changing gear.

One thing that I have noticed is that I don't get a huge jolt when changing from second to third (lurch when reapplying the power). Dunno why.

Cost me a tenner in flowers, too , but as my local garage had fitted a ramair panel filter (which ain't recommended or even supported on the MY00) I wanted to get rid of that. There was a pool of goo in the bottom of the airbox

I just hope that I'm not posting soon saying "MAF failure - any advice?"

Impressions: definite gains in mid range, not sure on high end.

Noise is an acquired taste. I love it now, but old ladies don't.

Worth a punt, particularly if my MAF stays intact

The problem is hearing it above the exhaust - at least when the windows are open!

I've got an MY99 that I wanted to fit the K&N57i on. Currently I too have a ram-air filter element. Right - I'll order one today!!

Chiark - Love the site. I'll be using that as my dummy guide. Cheers.

Squizz.

I also had a lump of gee in the airbox from my ITG, suppose it must be the oil dripping out - disgusting!

Question

I've always liked the look & sound of these kits, but are they damaging in any way to the car? I know they're supposed to give better air filtration over the standard unit, but I don't want to put my engine through any more stress than it's already subjected to Fitted a K&N kit to my MK2 Golf and a couple of weeks later the head gasket went - probably just coincidence, but I don't want costly things going bang on by scoob...

Scrappy2,

If you do a search, you will see that the biggest thing is MAF failures. Having said that I read up a lot before deciding, and whilst there is the question of MAF failures, I falied to find any that were directly linked to KnN filters.

So I took the plunge, as well as a few others.
