I have a completely standard exhaust system, and limited resources

Everyone seems to upgrade the backbox first, but from what I've read on here the biggest restriction is from the cat in the downpipe. If you look at Scoobymania's pricing, the downpipe costs virtually the same as the backbox, and it is of 'twin dump' design.

Which would give more gains, and what would an exhaust with a decent downpipe but a standard centre and rear sound like?

I did the usual backbox first thing, and then a year later did the d/p. given my time again I would do the d/p first cos it gave the best 'on the road' gain, sure, the backbox sounds good enough on it's own, but the downpipe made it feel like a different car.
The biggest reason most people do the b/b first is for the looks.

I agree with RON.

You wont experience as many of the gains without the mid and back box, but per pound, downpipe will make much more difference.
