This is really annoying, I've complained to my dealer twice aboat griding into 4th/5th when above 5000 revs, last they said to me that they could not test it - as the car would be traveling over the legal speed limit at this point (aprox 100mph). I suggested reving to 5000 in 2nd and going straight to 4th... This is aparently outside the operating parameters of the gearbox.

Is it really just a simple adjustment???? Are these useless dealers stringing me along??

Just a note to say that the gearbox seems facked now............
Roll on April for my M3.
Drove one for 2 days and it outclasses the P1 in every way.
Look and learn Subaru.

Arron. I've heard that this is a really common problem which is very easily fixed. There is a nut which comes loose on the gearbox which just needs tightening up.

Pete C @ Scoobysport will (hopefully) confirm this - your dealer should be able to do this in no time under warranty for you...

Whilst he's not a dealer, I'm sure Pete Croney will backup what I've said which should (perhaps) help you convince your dealer. On the other hand, unless your dealer is a complete plank, they should either take you word for it and have a look or bite the bullet and test it themselves.

If they are not willing, go to a proper dealer. I know that Lavender Hill have fixed this problem for various people in the past.

Ta,

Matt

Yes, very simple problem and yes related to a single nut. My P1 did the same thing when I picked it up. My dealer sent his mechanic out with me and as I changed up into 4th at about 6k it graunched- he said "ok we'll sort it - it's the usual problem". It seems to be something to do with the UK assembly process- possibly changing the Type R gearset for longer Uk gears and re assembling it poorly.

Can I get one thing straight here.

The P1 was built in Japan with this gearbox fitted. It was not 'rebuilt' here.

Thankyou

Aaron

Your problem is more likely to be a tired syncro than the mainshaft nut coming loose. If this happens it will jump out of 5th when you lift off the throttle.

Aaron,

Have to agree - that's where I'm heading next. Fed up with interior quality, etc.. but you get what you pay for.

The Scoob Turbo is great value.

The P1 not so good value but a great car.

The M3 I would assume has everything you need for a car that price. (interior, looks, performance, reliability)

Do you mind me asking what the payments break down to on the M3 ? (I assume you're not paying cash, but then again...)

Arron, I can really sympathize with you on this one as I too had a P1 with the same problem from new (no synchro on 5th). I'm now on my 3rd 5th gear set and at last the problem seems to have been rectified,-1200 miles and no re occurrence!. Dealers had received some sort of communication warning of this fault, and so were on the ball- took them 2 days to repair.

Is the BM as quick, 'cos it's looking very tempting?

Cheers. D.no
