Loud thud on acceleration (2001 WRX, 2k miles!)
#1
Subaru 2001 WRX. 3 months old. Approx 2,000 miles).
If I'm travelling at around 40mph in 4th or 5th and then quickly cog down to 2nd and accelerate to overtake, there is an almighty thud at the rear when I release the clutch(worse with passengers). I emptied the boot and checked the spare was secure but the problem is still there - its definitely underneath at the back of the car. The car is booked in at the dealer who acknowledges that there is a problem but doesn't know what. You don't expect this from a new car, especially a Subaru (The drivetrain on my Toyota Celica GT4 with over 100,000 miles never failed, even with the abuse it got - shame it never had the handling!). I tried my mates scooby (older model with 3,000 miles) & it was okay.
Has anyone else had this problem? I'll let you know what the dealer says, but I am not confident that they'll diagnose it properly.

You will find that its quite common as my MY00 does it i think its the diff, something with the transmission and ive never had a problem with it, the loud thud is the diff engaging i think, just dont be too worried about it.

I noticed a similar sound last weekend while autocrossing. Near as I can figure, I agree it has something to do with the rear end differential. As basically I only heard this on hard acceleration out of tight corners where the inside rear wheel may have become a bit light on the asphalt. Tow thunks: One as it lifted, the second as it touched down again. Pretty startling when it happens, but there is no obvious damage from it and I would guess that it's pretty normal.

Skidpro,
My Turbo MY00 did exactly the same from about 2000 miles. I have to agree with TonyBurns it must be something to do with the diff, It was under exactly the same conditions as you describe. Mine has now done 8000 miles and the noise has almost gone.
Don't panic mate!!.
Cheers
