Knocking from left rear.
I've got a MY93 WRX and it has developed a knocking noise from the left rear. It's more noticeable when going slowly over rough roads. It sounds like two bits of metal hitting each other.
I've heard that the WRXs are prone to wearing the bushes on the rear anti-roll bar, any one with a WRX (or any scooby for that matter) had the same thing? If so how much approx. is a new set fitted? Should i go the up-rated route or would this upset the car as the rest of the bushes are standard? Any ideas please.
Cheers,
Tony.
Doh, doh, doh, doooooooh. Should have posted in the suspension forum! Sorry.

Unlikely that the strut top mount bolt has worked loose after 8 years
. I had a similar noise at the end of last year and it was the n/s/r Bilstein strut that had failed (Legacy RS). Didn't really affect the handling on normal roads but was quite noticeable on track. Noise was most apparent at slow speeds, particularly on roundabouts, but disappeared as the speed rose. Very difficult to prove that the strut's failed until it's removed. Dealer couldn't prove my diagnosis so I replaced both struts at enormous expense
which cured the prob. Fortunately, Impreza struts are about half the price of Legacy Bilsteins. Another (similar) noise has become apparent now, but I've traced that to worn drop link bushes which are being replaced next week. Hope you get it fixed soon.

I had exactly the same noise on my 93 WRX last week, it went in for a service and got the guy to have a look for me. In the end it was just the heat sheild had come loose behind the exhaust
Quick tighten and It's been fine since. May not be expensive after all

Tony,
I agree with HunterB . On my 94 WRX it proved to be a worn shock absorber. I very much suspect it's the same with your car too. However look on the bright side,it's always a good excuse to fit some up-rated parts
Regards,
John
