Gearlever Gate Spring
#1
My gearlever is not returning to the central postion and has gone a bit sloppy.
It it just a spring that has snapped or dropped off or is it more serious than that. I know Fords just have a spring to centralise the gearlever, so I hope my Scoob is the same.

yeah there is a spring underneath that snaps and gives the problem that you got but i'm pretty certain you can only change it from below, it is fixed to the plate that holds the gear lever mounting arm and goes across to the universal joint on the gear selecter arm all you have to do is take the 12 mm nut off and remove the plate attach the spring and put the nut back on.

This has recently happended to mine, and I had a look today whilst under the car trying to sort out my mystery vibration. The spring had obviously snapped or something, but I didn't have one to hand. Looks fairly easy to do though.
When I rang a local dealer he told me the spring was in the gearbox and it would have to come out!!! Muppet.....

Mine went on the last clang n ball and it seems that the 1st/2nd return spring is on the outside and the 4th/5th gate spring is on the inside of the box. Obviously the 1st/2nd gate wears quicker which is why it's on the outside. Saying this I'm not sure if on the '99 they are both on the inside. Mines a 98.

you don't have to take the box out to change the internal spring it's all in a little unit bolted to the side of the gearbox it is do able insitu but you may have to lower the gearbox cross member.
