Question

After a boyish start I noticed a grinding noise coming from the rear of the car. I nursed the car home and the noise seemed to have disappeared. I think it was coming from the rear diff. I have a an MY99 import model with 14000km on the clock could it be developing problems already?. Has anyone got any experiences of this?. Cheers in Advance

I had a similar noise a few years ago on my old MY95 scooby the day after a rolling road session by a bunch of cowboys who managed to burn out my rear diff- needless to say I've never gone back there. Luckily it was replaced under warranty. Have you been to any RR sessions? Not saying that rr sessions cause this but if the car is nailed ***** nilly on the rollers then the rear diff can burn out if they aren't properly loaded settled in etc..

I doubt you could do this sort of damage with a boyish start though. It sounds like bearings like christian said..have it looked at. There is a P1 at a breakers as we speak and when I went it still had a rear diff on it so if all else fails you should be able to pick up a 600mile rear diff cheap!

Do you still have any warranty left?

(edited- ps. you may find that changing the oil in the diff might have some effect but you shouldn't be getting probs with a diff that's done so few miles.)

The noise was back again this morning. Without having pushed the car at all.

Help.

Cheers for the replies and I hope I won't need that spare diff but just in case what sort of price would the diff cost?.
Also could someone describe the procedure for changing the diff oil.

I had the rear diff. changed under warrenty at 1800 miles! It started to clonk on torque reversal, most noticable at low speed in traffic. It got worse over a couple of days but the dealer got their finger out and it was replaced very quickly (claims he had never had this happen before - but he would say that would`nt he!) Dont forget this is a limited slip unit and costs the thick end of £1800!!
Oil change is **** easy, take out the bottom plug (1/2" square) let it drain, replace plug and remove the upper one and refill until the oil starts to dribble out(1.8ltrs.) replace plug and thats it! :cool ont forget - you must use limited slip compatable 75/90 oil! e.g. Valvoline DuraBlend GL5-LS
