how many cats in a jdm sti8? I want to decat my standard system before i have it remaped, also wanna just see how it sounds before buying a different system, as i dont mind it quiet as it is, no one hears me coming like a wolf in sheeps clothing! So can anyone let me know how to sort it out?

2 cats on EU STi 8, not sure about JDm STi 8 as this has a JDM STi 9 engine in, slight different internals, different turbo, different down pipe & different up-pipe.

I believe Bob Rawle has an STi 9 (same engine) he may be able to help.

Beware of one thing, appart from boost spiking and other usual issues : DP flange on turbo side is different from std previous single scroll VF flanges.

No way to fit an usual DP...

is one of the cats in the downpipe then? a friend of mine owns an exhaust manufacturing comapny so i was gonna get him to make me the pipes i needed. If I was going for a tek 3, would i need to fully decat the system? or just remove the middle cat? What effect does boost spiking have? i think i will simply replace the cats teh day before i go for the remap, thanks for any info

Your car is fitted with one cat in the DP, the second one is in the next part of the line (middle).
You don't have to decat to go for any Tek remap, but... the more you flow the better
Boost spiking may seriously reduce engine life, depending on the overshoot value... (basically, anything above 1.40b must be considered)
Think about legal emissions also

so removing just the centre cat before the remap could keep emissions more close to or within legal limits and with remap could help improve bhp, also would this avoid the boost spiking? or would just the removal of one of the cats still cause the problem?

thanks

JDM cars do not have a second cat ... there is only one and thats in the downpipe, the second bulge is a resonator nothing more. Changing the exhaust cat back won't do much. (except for the noise of course)
