Unhappy

Hi all,

I am currently driving a 280PS Japan Domestic Ver 3 Rexy. Modifications include:-

VF22 IHI Turbo
3" Cusco Downpipe
3" Straight thru custom mandrel bend exhaust
Apexi AVC-R
Apexi Power FC w/ FC Commander

Boost remains at 1.2 bar Max and ECU is fully programmed.

Recently the other day, after a track event, my car started to have some conrod bearing rattling noise. It is more apparent between 2500 and 3000RPM. And worst of all, the sound is intermittent.

But to play safe, I will get my workshop to open up the engine. I have searched everywhere for stronger conrods but to no avail. Anyone has any recommendations?
And also, one of my friends suggested that I ceramic coat the pistons, do you think it is worthwhile?
My low and mid end torque is not too good becoz of the bigger turbo. Any suggestions and sure mods to assist in the lower ranges of the rpm? I will be polishing my head and at the same time putting in a thinner head gasket to increase the CR by 0.7.

Hope someone can enlighten me

Rexyboy

rexboy,

what you want is the trick STi Group A rods, they were used in the old Group A cars, look pretty much like production items, but have an extra oil feed to the little end bearing and are, reputedly, pretty much unbreakable. They are also, sadly, about a rare as rocking horse droppings :-( But fear not, because Farndon Engineering will be only too happy to make you a set of Group A rods.... it would appear they make quite a bit of stuff for Prodrive, so they can't be that bad LOL

They have a website,

Cool

rexboy,

Another alternative could be fitting the new (MY01) STi rods which should work on your engine, they are said to be stronger and not as expensive as aftermarket ones.
Aprox. price should be 75 GBP.

Cheers,
Carlos H.
