Ive got my engine down to the crankcase (oil pump relief valve stuck open, doing the big ends) and ive just taken the access plugs out to expose the piston pins, removed the circlips but not sure how the subaru special tool works to get the gudgeon pins out.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Andy

The subaru manual states a tool for removing them..

The manuals you can down load from here

Obviously the engine one has all this in etc..

Exclamation

The subaru special tool is a slide hammer that has a claw assembly that you insert into the gudgeon pins hollow centre, you then expand the claw so it grips and then use the slide hammer to work the gudgeon pin out of the piston/little end.

Cool

Or you could drift it out from the other side, over the top of the con rod of the piston in front of it with a drift rod and up against the back of the pin, then give it a couple of hard taps to get it moving, after that small light taps will have it out in no time!

Good luck

Ah gotcha. I should have pointed out I dont have the special tool and was looking for an alternate method. I'll fashion a drift and go 'round the back' as it were.

I did wonder how the ST worked tho, that makes sense. Maybe I could modify a very small umbrella...............

Cheers all

Look in Project area, for TweenieRob's thread .. he shows how to strip a motor. Including removing pistons with a drift...

Yeah, nice thread. Im amazed at the difference between CDB and ODB! Mines in much better shape than the one TweenieRob took apart (so far). Hopefully will be able to rebuild it without too much expense, depends if the suspected damage to the crank will polish out or not.

i found an easy way of removing the piston pins was to use a small square file.Push the file into the pin, then pull it to the side to grip the pin and then pull the pin out.works every time!

You can also use an easy out ("Screw" type bit with reverse threads used for extracting thing). Just tap it with a hammer and remove the pins slowly. It worked well for me.

I gotem out with a long drift in the end, bit of a piggy job because the conrod obscures the 1st pin out of each side of the block. Also picked up an inner circlip on one of them so have to make sure the groove in the side of the piston is damaged. Doh!

I guess it doesnt matter if the inside of the pin is marked when taking it out using the above methods. Would be nice if they had a thread cut in them actually for ease of removal.

It was No 3 big end BTW, crank looks recoverable.

Unlike the engine i stripped which was far from recoverable...

I have always punched them out from the other side, but when i finally get started on my 2.0 build i am going to try my stud extractor..
