What are the main differences between Jap Spec WRX (280BHP) and UK (208BHP) in 98 MY (Phase 1).

Is it a case of bolt on bits and bobs, or are there internal differences?

How difficult would it be to make UK engine produce similar output to Jap spec?

James.

Hi
The main differences are the turbo, they're generally bigger on the WRX;s. Other than that I think there are some internal engine differences but I dont' know what exactly!

WRxs have more lightweight components than standard UK, some suspension parts are aluminium i think, and the bonnet on the wrx is aluminium as oppose to steel on UK car. I think the WRX is 50-100Kg lighter than a UK car.

Fitting a performance exhaust + air filter + phase 1 Power Engineering ECU remap will get a UK scooby to around 276bhp.

cheers
Alex

Hi,
I've got a standard MY98 WRX, so I was interested to read this post. I've heard that they also have stronger engine internals to cope with the extra standard power from the bigger turbo, but I'm not too sure if it's true. The ECU will be different and probably mapped for 98 - 100 RON fuel (but it seems to run well on 97 and even 95 - when I've been forced to use it.)
I know you asked about engine differences, but some others are as follows:
climate control as standard, electric folding mirrors, rear wiper, aluminium boot lid (as well as bonnet), possibly a de-catted center section exhaust (because it doesn't have to pass European startup emission laws), centre rev counter with speedo on the right (makes it more rally like or something), higher rev limit of 7500, bigger brake pads (I was told by the mechanic who couldn't get the standard UK ones to fit and had to get others), shorter gearing (same as STI) and erm, can't think of any more for now. I'll let you know if any others crop up in my mind. Can anyone elso add to this list or confirm the stronger engine internals or de-catted centre exhaust bits?

Thanks for the info guys...

Really looking at engine differences, more out of curiosity than anything else

Already have HKS induction and exhaust systems

Question is, if one was to swap the turbo and ECU on a UK car, for the Jap WRX items are we saying pop goes the engine

James.

J_H,

My UK94 is running with a WRX turbo as apparently it was smaller (less laggy) than the UK fitment at the time.

Not sure what the model number is thou'

Have no problems with it at all. Its much noiser than the UK one though. Whistles quite loudly on scroll-up.

Mark.
