Question

When I bought my FireStorm brand-new, the gear-change was a crunchy nightmare for the first 800 miles and is now sweet and slick.

When I first got in my new Scooby, ditto.

Can I expect a similar improvement? OK I know bike and car gearboxes are slightly different designs, but I live in hope (and die in Castleton, natch)

I had a similar problem with mine, I thought at first that there must be something wrong with the gearbox (terrible when cold, ok when warm), however during the first couple of thousand miles it gradually improved. It is still slightly crunchy from second to first when cold (3.7K), however once the car has warmed up it is nice and smooth.

When hot it refuses to go into neutral (Firestorm, that is).
When cold it refuses to go into reverse (Scooby, that is).
Things may improve on your Scoob , but after about 50K they'll get worse again

Not much help I know,

Andy

If reverse is reluctant on Scooby stick it in second (or any other gear with synchro) before selecting reverse - this helps
